5.0 out of 5 stars Olivier is always wonderful to watch and to listen to
Olivier is always wonderful to watch and to listen to. His delivery of dialogue and his gestures draw the audience into the story. The voice is absolutely captivating. I could listen to him for hours

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor production ruins classic
This has all the hallmarks of a classic film, disregarding the fact that it is produced in black and white, whilst the cover shots are all coloured (this has no relevance to the validity of the film).
The film reproduction is the worst I have seen and the sound quality is very poor indeed.
My only recommendation is do not by this version of As You Like It under...

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality issue ruins classic, 8 Mar 2005

This film has the potential to be a classic, regardless of its Black and White format. I say potential because due to poor post production values the dilm fails to deliver. The picure quality is poor and the sound quality? Well it has sound but it too is of very poor quality.
Don't waste your money on this version it is sadly unwatchable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lost in the fog, 14 May 2009

As the other reviewers have pointed out, sound quality is dismal. You often can't make out what the actors are saying. I regret paying a bargain price for this unwatchable film.
The Image Entertainment DVD (pressed from a Blackhawk Film Collection print) gets high reviews on US Amazon. As You Like it [DVD] [1936] [US Import] [NTSC] Perhaps it's worth trying.

This is Olivier's first film performance and if you are not used to the absolute precision that was demanded from players and production in this era (1936) you will probably find some of the acting a little stilted. Shakespeare, even bad Shakespeare, is always good drama - why? Because it is the dialogue that matters. What we see and read into Shakespeare depends more upon our own natures than it does upon its presentation. Shakespeare is meant to be read and read again until, like Holy writ, it is embedded into our hearts. Add it to your collection.
