5.0 out of 5 stars Krystle Warren, 17 Jun 2012

This review is from: Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace (Audio CD)
After seeing Krystle Warren at two gigs, Rufus Wainwright's Lyceum Show, and in the Brighton Festival on her own, I was totally converted. She is original, with a whole jazz-folk genre to her name. It's a fabulous album, with brilliant songs, and wonderful instrumentation. But perhaps, what sets it apart from most albums these days is that it was recorded totally live in the studio, with no overdubs, but just the whole group playing and the singers singing all at the same time. This gives the album a real sense that the musicians are really playing for one another, and this really adds to the general sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Built To Last, 22 May 2012

This review is from: Love Songs: A Time You May Embrace (Audio CD)
Krystle Warren is a rare creature; a singer/songwriter unafraid to stand
well outside the shadow of ephemeral passing trends. A consummate musician
with a voice which can stir your spirit and melt your heart. 'Love Songs :
A Time You May Embrace' is her second solo album and a mile and a half
further forward in terms of development than her 2009 debut 'Circles'.
The twelve compositions in this collection are uniformly wonderful, especially
given the relatively short period within which they were recorded. Working to
a tight deadline has clearly added a sense of immediacy to their realisation.

Ms Warren's rich, elastic voice is a classy and affecting instrument. Her
lower register is especially impressive but she is not afraid to explore
above the stave to fine effect. (A rendition of Kate McGarrigle's 'I Don't Know'
witnessed at Rufus Wainwright's recent London Lyceum concert was utterly
mesmerising). A voice to rank with the very best in the listening world.

Stylistically the songs run the gamut from jaunty New Orleans blues ('Five
Minutes Late'), through shadowy country territory ('I Worry Less') and sixties-
flavoured balladry ('Forever Is A Long Time'), to neo-classical whimsy (the
delightful 'The Clod and The Pebble, whose limber strings and dreamy harmonies
frame one of the album's retrained highlights). With the gorgeous 'Every Morning',
however, she digs down deep into her soul. When she sings "I love you" we can feel
that she means it with every fibre of her being. A song so tender I almost wept!

Ms Warren and her music are indubitably built to last.

Essential.

Indescribably brilliant. I don't want to spoil the enjoyment of those who love fascinating music by trying to describe this. But if you've ever been in love, this will resonate. For some the second or third listening will be where it really takes off as something very special. Don't rely on the snippets. Just buy it.

The first experience I had with Krystle Warren was at a Rufus Wainwright concert - it was an amazing heartfelt performance that stole the most of the show. She has stuck with me ever since.

This album is all that.

Wasn't billed at Rufus Wainwright concert but was listed as backing singer, and what a singer. Very different music and moving lyrics.
