3.0 out of 5 stars What to write on the Ubuntu command line
Let me say that this is as comprehensive a guide to Ubuntu as you will find. It tells you the commands you can use and how to write them. As a novice I have expectations, jobs to do. I do not have my expectations turned into live code from this book. The jobs I want to do are generic predictable. I expect authors to predict and assist. They don't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ubuntu (review) Unleashed 2012, 21 Feb 2012
Ubuntu Unleashed 2012. An excellent introduction and guide to one of the most popular and versatile Linux-based operating systems. It comes with the latest release of 'Ubuntu 11.10', which is on a 'Live DVD'. You can boot up the Ubuntu operating system from the DVD and try out the system before installing it on your computer hard drive. You can choose to completely re-format your hard drive and install Ubuntu instead of your old Windows or Mac. system (recommended), or install it along side your Windows or Mac. system (a dual boot) and choose between them when you turn on your computer, or you can just remove the DVD from the drive after shutting down and your original system will remain unchanged.
The book is really easy to follow and understand, even for absolute beginners and those who have just discovered that you actually have a choice of operating systems other than Windows and Mac. systems. It is an easy step by step guide which takes you through the very basics of installing, setting up and running Ubuntu and its many applications. Then slowly introduces the user on to more intermediate and advanced applications, networking, server systems and programming.
The book seems rather daunting at first, having over 800 pages it is not exactly a book you can take in during an afternoon's reading. But it is not meant for this. It is aimed at the Ubuntu user as a long term companion, tutorial and reference manual, whether they are beginner or long term follower of Ubuntu. The author, Matthew Helmke, a long-time Ubuntu community forum administrator has produced an excellent easy step by step guide to the Ubuntu-Linux operating system which manages to keep things simple enough for beginners and is also advanced enough for the most experienced users.
I converted to Linux many years ago, after I had too many problems and gremlins in my Windows XP system. I tried out several Linux systems, all of them have their merits over Windows but some are a bit of a handful for beginners. Ubuntu Linux has become one of the top operating systems behind Windows and Mac, and is easy and versatile for everyone to use.
I would recommend this book and operating system to anyone.
Forget expensive Microsoft Windows and Mac. systems.
Just buy this and you'll never look back! Superb Value!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a good starting point, 13 Jun 2012

This book is a good starting point for everyone interested in Ubuntu. It very briefly tells you about... hmm, everything what you can do with Ubuntu. It even has a chapter about games. In the latter chapters there is even introduction to few programming languages. You must remember though that it covers everything but it only touches a subject. I like that it clearly has been written by someone who knows the OS through, and I also like the easy language used. It's far far from being a compendium, but it's still a very good starting point and you can find a good introduction to everything Ubuntu.

5.0 out of 5 stars General, 4 Mar 2012
Reading this book, and having a background in Windows development, I have no hesitation in recommending it to Windows professionals wanting a quick and comprehensive entry to Linux. (Although specifically entitled Ubuntu it will be understandable and relevant to most ditributions)

Ubuntu Unleashed is written in an easy-to-read style. It is comprehensive and the detail is explained in a lucid and logical fashion. It does everything it says on the cover.

Readers interested in Linux, whatever their background, should find it a "must have" item on their bookshelf.
