This review is from: Varg Veum Box 3 - 3-DVD Box Set ( Varg Veum - Skriften på veggen / Varg Veum - Svarte får / Varg Veum - Dødens drabanter ) ( The Writing On The Wall / Black Sheep / The Consorts of Death ) (DVD)
The writing on the wall
The third series opens with a dramatic episode in which we find out why Varg was fired from the child welfare services and started working as a PI. It takes place six years after the fateful event and Varg is now working as a teacher and in a committed and happy relationship with Karin (Lene from Aqua shows her acting skills). But then his old nemesis (played by Nikolai Lie Kaas known from Danish films such as The Candidate, Flickering Lights, the Idiots, Murk and Open Hearts) is released from jail and it sets off a chain of events that not only threatens to destroy the life that Varg has carefully built up but also might prove fatal for everybody involved.

Black Sheep
Varg's girlfriend Karin's younger sister Siren got involved with drugs and ran away from home when she was 15. Now their mother is dying and her last wish is to see the missing daughter one last time. Varg promises to find her before it's too late and he makes quick progress, but, as per Varg's usual luck, things escalate and it is only the beginning of a complicated and dangerous affair that involves a world full of drugs, prostitutes and shady people - and possibly a connection to the higher echelons of society.

The Consorts of Death
A boy from one of Varg's cases as a child protection worker is charged with murdering his adoptive parents and asks for Varg's help.

Once again the series is well cast and -acted and the rainy and moody, but beautiful Bergen landscape is perfect to set the stage for the gritty and often very violent crimes that are the basis for the individual stories. The stories themselves I suppose are not new or original to the Nordic crime wave, but that doesn't detract from the fact that this is a very good way to spend a few cold winter hours on the sofa.

There are 9 episodes in the series so far and they are (in order):

Bitter Flowers
Sleeping Beauty
Yours Until Death
Fallen angels
Woman in the fridge
Buried dogs

And on this DVD:
The Writing on the Wall
Black Sheep
The Consorts of Death

Each feature length episode can be viewed on its own, but I recommend you start from the beginning to set the stage for Varg's development.

Update 25 June 2013:
There are now further 3 instalments (with English subtitles) in the series:
I mørket er alle ulver grå|At Night All Wolves Are Grey
De døde har det godt|The Dead Have It Easy
Kalde hjerter|Cold Hearts

Not sure initially whether I would like this series but now I have watched them all, it does not disappoint in anyway and some of the camera work is fantastic. Not enough in the series though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very acceptable entertainment, 16 May 2013

This review is from: Varg Veum Box 3 - 3-DVD Box Set ( Varg Veum - Skriften på veggen / Varg Veum - Svarte får / Varg Veum - Dødens drabanter ) ( The Writing On The Wall / Black Sheep / The Consorts of Death ) (DVD)
Both box 2 and box 3 of Varg Veum are superior in content to the rather more conventional cop show that is box 1 for there is a noticeable improvement. The two later boxes still do not match such Nordic masterpieces as The Bridge, The Killing and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but the three separate stories that comprise each of box 2 & 3 have original and engaging plot lines, explain some of the central character's past history and allow the inclusion of a love interest. The series benefits enormously from the acting skills of Trond Espen Seim in the title role. He is always very watchable and has absolute control of the part. His, at times, waspish relations with a local senior police officer are better handled than in the first series and here far more attention has been spent in establishing their working relationship and fleshing out the officer's part. As always with Scandinavian cop shows the production values and support performances are very good.

It is a revealed truth that the more original a story the more necessary it is to suspend reality and Varg Veum is no exception for extraordinary leaps of the fantastic abound. That said the abiding impression is that of the well crafted thriller. Box 1 does not measure up to box 2 & box 3 but for full enjoyment the purchase is necessary in order to watch character development.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Private Eye Show, 27 Dec 2012

I bought the entire collection, and enjoyed each one. An extremely good private eye show. The interaction with the police detective makes the show The Detective is always on Varg's case but he not only respects him, but counts on him to investigate in ways the police can't.

I have yet to come across a Scandinavian TV series I didn't like. This one is great. The plots are good, and the acting also good. The fact he is super looking has no impact on my review of course!
