4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful box set, but only 18 discs not 20, 10 Mar 2012

This review is from: The Debussy Collection (Audio CD)
A beautiful box set of Claude Debussy that features not only the famous pieces like Clair De Lune and La Mer but also the lesser known works too. Features some of the world's top orchestras and conductors. Please note that the Amazon list of works is correct except there is no disc 19, nor a dvd disc 20.

The discs are in thick cardboard sleeves which are colour coded to make finding what you are after a little easier, and it comes with a 32 page booklet describing the contents and a brief biography in English, French, and German. There are no libretti for Pelleas or the songs.

Discs 1 - 3: Orchestral works featuring Pierre Boulez and Leonard Bernstein conducting amongst others, with the recordings dating mostly from the sixties.

Discs 4 - 8: Piano works featuring Paul Crossley mostly, and dating between the sixties and the nineties

Discs 9 & 10: Chamber music featuring artists like Isaac Stern, James Galway, James Levine, & Andre Previn and dating mostly from the nineties

Discs 11 & 12: Songs mostly sung by Dawn Upshaw (nineties) and Eileen Farrell (sixties)

Discs 13 - 15: Boulez's version of Pelleas et Melisande with the Royal Opera House orchestra and choir from 1970

Disc 16: Michael Tilson Thomas' version of the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian with the London Symphony Orchestra from 1991

Disc 17: Encores. A collection of alternate arrangements by artists such as James Galway and Isaac Stern

Disc 18: Xavier de Maistre's arrangements for harp recorded in 2008.

All this for less than 30 is an amazing achievement, and I can happily recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music - beautiful performances, 15 Mar 2013

I don't wont to 'review' this set - other than to say its a sheer delight.

But there is a mistake in the information supplied - a mistake that very nearly put me off buying the set.

It is listed on the box, CD sleeve and on-line info that the delightful sonata trio for flute, harp and viola is performed in an arrangement by James Galway. I couldn't think why such a perfectly conceived piece needed to be 'arranged' for orchestra!

Well the good news is that it isn't! The performance attributed to this none-existent arrangement is, much to my relief, simply Debussy's original - and a very lovely performance it is too.

(There is a Galway arrangement of one item - but it's not of the trio sonata.)

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Debussy Collection (Audio CD)
This is a simply amazing collection, beautiful compositions and beautifully played - what more could you ask for. Factor in the low price for the set and it becomes a no-brainer whether or not you should purchase it.
If you are browsing around this product and these reviews then I assume you must have at least some interest in the music of this great man. That being the case then you will be over the moon with this collection.

It is a very varied collection: solo harp, solo piano, orchestral, opera, vocal and it is totally mesmerising to listen to. You could easily lose yourself in this collection.

This must be the best musical bargain ever!
