Beautifully written and inspirational as it focusses on the depths of relationships which are finely tuned within the confines of a holy calling. Honest interchanges, personal insights, perceptive reflections on the agonies born within the soul as a result of cruelty at the hands of ignorant men. A truly rewarding read which needs to be read as part of the six part series to be best understood and appreciated. I can only commend the author for her skilful writing

I am happily making my way though this series and have watched as the story of the monks has built to this. It is shocking, almost from the first sentence and, at first, I was not sure if I would like it. It seemed different from the other books. It is, however, excellent. Terrible things happen to the Abbot and his family and also Oswald. These are not glossed over yet the promise of redemption is never lost. William is growing as a character and I love how multi-layered he is. He is not the villain I thought he might be but something much more complex - I like him. Basically, it a rattling good story which makes "good people" attractive and interesting. Without sounding like an old misery, that is a rare talent these days. Loved it. Will now seek out the next book. Am very interested in developments signposted for William and...well just read it yourself. Highly recommended.

Helps you grapple with real issues. The setting of hundreds of years ago removes you from direct argument, and you have to make your own application to your present circumstances ... but there is no evading the Biblical discipleship!

Having read the Hawk and the Dove, I thought this would not live up to expectations but it certainly did and gave a clear message about forgiveness. I have already recommended it to two people who have both felt the same as me

Another very interesting look at ancient monastic life. Shows how much individual conscience must play a part in our lives.
