4.0 out of 5 stars Problematic tempo in Rach 3, movement 1, 23 April 2012
Charles Voogd (Underwaterland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 3 (BIS: BISSACD1988) (Audio CD)
In Holland we've that saying `de eerste klap is een daalder waard', which means something like 'if your first hit is hard; you've nearly won the game'. I mean, why is the first movement of this beautiful symphony taken so slow? The orchestral surge in the first bars sounds like as if there's no belief in the music at all. The whole first movement sounds like that: thoughtful in the extreme, low on contrast and colour. I wonder how Shui and the orchestra mange that; because the music itself is so colourful! Right after this I listened to Ashkenazy's performance with the Concertgebouw orchestra - taped in the early 80s with that wonderful Decca sound - and, some may complain that's to fast, it gives the music that propelling momentum this symphony needs so enormously. The following two movements are both very well played (and recorded) but as a listener I can't get the disappointing first movement out of my head. The symphony ends with a very hectic coda, which is played here with enthusiasm and a daringly fast tempo as if someone shouted `coffee's ready' to the orchestra so let's play it as fast as possible. A crazy thing after a slow paced 40 minutes.
Are there listeners/collectors buying this recording for the Paganini Variations only? If so, it can be recommended, it very well done! Especially at iTunes you can buy this for a crazy 26,- alone, the first track, which goes for 8 seconds, costing 0,99 so that's a real bargain. Hope there's a downloadable cheaper version available.... because it's worth it.
