5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, beautifully illustrated!, 13 Aug 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Swimmy (Hardcover)
As a child, this was my favorite book. Reading it as adult to my own daughter, I marvel at the author's use of words to create the incredible imagery of the sea. I remember as a child being spellbound by his descriptions of the "eel whose tail was almost too far away to remember", and the "lobster who walked about like a water-moving machine." Even if this book had no illustrations, it would be a treasure. However, the water color illustrations are beyond beautiful. Not surprisingly, my own two year old daughter is enthralled by this book, just as I was. I recommend it for pre-school through elementary age children (and for those adults among us who never grew up!)

5.0 out of 5 stars How Swimmy helps his friends., 14 May 1999
By A Customer
A children's book about a small fish who is different than the other fish in its "school" and who teaches other small fish how to survive by "camouflage." Little children really enjoy watching Swimmy in the illustrations. The book was a 1964 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustration in a book for children.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is inspirational!, 28 May 1999

I love to read this to our students in our children's library. It's lessons are so varied. Teamwork, thinking creatively and being different are all topics to discuss after this great read. The illustrations and language are simply astounding. It is an underwater dreamscape that provokes contemplation for adults as well as children!

5.0 out of 5 stars stand out fish, stand out book, 4 May 2011
By
This review is from: Swimmy. (Hardcover)
this is a great story about a little black fish who was different from the rest of his big family, a school of red fish who lived happily in their corner of the sea. after losing his entire family, swimmy sets out to explore the wonders of the vast sea. eventually, he comes upon another school of fish, just like his family and wants to show them the amazing things he's seen. but they are scared to explore, for fear of being eaten by larger fish. swimmy is sad for them that they should miss out on the whole wide world, and so teaches everyone to work together so that the "little guy" is able to be brave and stand up to the big fish in the end. the printed/stamped and watercolour illustrations are gorgeous, as are the illustrations from all of Lionni's books.
