5.0 out of 5 stars An Original, Magical and Very Readable Adventure, 11 Dec 2012
This review is from: Lionel and the Golden Rule (Lionel's Grand Adventure Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review

Lionel's Grand Adventure (Lionel and the Golden Rule) is a story about a short, chubby, ill-coordinated twelve year old boy who is often the butt of other's jokes. Badly treated by his own brother and suffering a mother who constantly yells at him and criticises him, Lionel often looks for peace. Seeking refuge in his new bedroom one day (he and his family have just relocated from the Massachusetts to a small town in Missouri) he discovers what he thinks is a larger than average rabbit's foot in the closet. He soon finds out the foot has magical powers. He also soon finds out, from the local candy store owner, an old eccentric few take seriously, all about the legend of the Three-toed Pot- bellied Walbauns, and realises it is not a rabbit's foot he possesses at all, but a foot of one of the very same creatures. But will Lionel put this to good use!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and particularly liked the magic weaved by the Three-toed Pot-bellied Walbauns, which never quite worked the way it should, but always seemed to achieve the right results. This book is extremely well-written and very readable and held my attention throughout. With its well-constructed text and its light touch, it has all the right ingredients for the intended reader; originality, humour, a touch of magic, a likeable hero, and, above all, a sound lesson in how to treat others. `Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' - The Golden Rule.
I think parents could read this aloud to younger children whilst enjoying it themselves, and those old enough to read will have no problem. Either way, it is an excellent book.
I highly recommend Lionel's Grand Adventure (Lionel and the Golden Rule) for children aged 5 to adult. I will certainly be reading more of Paul Hewlett's books myself, in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable - a breath of fresh air, 27 July 2014

This review is from: Lionel and the Golden Rule (Lionel's Grand Adventure Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
Lionel is picked on incessantly by his mother and brother, making his life a misery, but he finds a lucky Three-Toed Pot-Bellied Wampaum's foot to create some magic to help him out. The trouble is, the magic never quite goes as he'd expected it.

This is the first in a thoroughly enjoyable series by Paul R Hewlett, and I managed to read them in the order 3,2,1. Unlike other series, it doesn't really matter, since Lionel's adventures with the foot causing mayhem in his life are unique each time.

It's a quick read for an adult, and I expect young people graduating to chapter books may struggle a little from time to time but will really enjoy the adventures too. Lionel is wholesome and lovable, his friends and adversaries are delightfully normal, and the whole series is a breath of fresh air.

I'll just add a baseball alert for those allergic to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book to read with your kids!, 2 April 2013

This review is from: Lionel and the Golden Rule (Lionel's Grand Adventure Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
This is the second "Lionel" adventure I've purchased - the first I handed to my young neighbour Molly - and she thoroughly enjoyed and giggled away as she read "Lionel's Christmas Adventure," and I downloaded this adventure of "Lionel" for her instead of an Easter egg. Much healthier!

Paul Hewlett writes with a sure touch for children, never talking down to them or preaching, but as Lionel often manages to get himself into trouble by taking the easy way out and using his magical "Walbaun" foot to grant wishes, parents can use Lionel's misadventures as a jumping point for discussions. Best of all though, this is an entertaining story, with lovable characters that children are sure to take to their heart. Highly recommended for schools & libraries, a delightful read for children and parents alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this one, 23 Dec 2012
This review is from: Lionel and the Golden Rule (Lionel's Grand Adventure Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
Paul R. Hewlett's Lionel's Grand Adventure (Lionel and the Golden Rule) may be recommended for children by the author but I found it a delightful read and think it'd be appreciated and enjoyed by any age group, especially lovers of baseball. The imagery and lessons are applicable for anyone, and easily communicated in the context of the poor bullied protagonist Lionel who has a chance to be a hero and what he does is admirable, but not in the way the reader expects. The author use of humor and creative writing is wonderful; how Lionel gets comeuppance for his nasty brother Feeney's middle of the night prank and getting Carrie, a girl he's interested in, to notice him had me laughing, which is no small feat. It's often said that the little child in us never dies and I find this to be true, especially now after reading Hewlett's book, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
