5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Collection BUT Beware!, 17 Jun 2012
By
This review is from: Criterion Collection: David Lean Directs Noel [Blu-ray] [1945] [US Import] (Blu-ray)
This is a wonderful collection. All four films are restored to a quality hitherto unseen here before.
HOWEVER and it is a BIG however - This Criterion set is Region A Locked - that is Bluray Region A locked.
So unless you have a Blu-ray machine that has been "doctored" it will NOT play these discs. All one gets is a message on the screen saying that these discs are not made for this region.Alternatively one must purchase an american machine and have it shipped over.
Criterion are region locking all of their new Blu-ray issues so it is well to understand which discs are playable here in europe.
I would suggest the website [...] - it reviews all the DVD/Blu-ray issues from all over and distinguishes between the different regions. With Blu-rays there is normally a notation on whether it is "locked" or not.
So I would give 5 stars to this collection. (as long as you can play it.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Compatibility Problems For UK Film Fans On A Stunning Box Set Of British Films We Can't Watch!, 21 Feb 2014

This review is from: Criterion Collection: David Lean Directs Noel [Blu-ray] [1945] [US Import] (Blu-ray)
As others have pointed out - just scanning the photos of this gorgeous 4-Film USA BLU RAY BOX SET is enough to make British Film Fans drool - but that's where the good news ends.

This is a US Criterion Release and is REGION-A LOCKED - so unless your British or European BLU RAY player is chipped to be Multi-Region for Blu Ray (which most aren't - and those that are - cost a lot) - then buying this will be an expensive and painful waste of time and money. It won't work on UK machines at all...

"Brief Encounter" can at least be obtained on a UK issue (see my separate review) but "Blithe Spirit" and "In Which We Serve" have to suffer the ignominy of French Language covers (they play the English movies) - while "This Happy Breed" is available also but last I looked as a somewhat expensive rarity.

Unfortunately like so many classics that originated in Blighty - when it comes to BLU RAY they seem to be in other people's hands. And no offence meant to them whatsoever – but it’s maddening to see US film fans thoroughly enjoy British Classics that should be rightfully and easily available here too…
