If you want to dip into the diverse gumbo that is New Orleans music ,this exceptionally priced two CD set is a very good place to start.
The first CD kicks off with tracks by Louis Armstrong ,Jelly Roll Morton, Kid Ory and other leading lights in the development of the N.O. jazz scene, moving on to early Blues and R'n'B exponents like Roy Brown ,Smiley Lewis and Guitar Slim with a nod towards Cajun with Clifton Chenier before moving into the R'n'R end of things with Bobby Charles.
The city's music from the 60's is well covered on the second CD with tracks from Fats Domino, Alan Toussaint,Professor Longhair and Lee Dorsey amongst a lot of other illustrious names from that era - some will be known to you - others not ,but every one of them had a hand in making New Orleans the musical hot bed it still is .
Music journalist and writer Garth Cartwright has done an exceptional job of gathering together 50 tracks that give a flavour of the development and influences on the music that has made the city's reputation as "the greatest music city on Earth ". Aficianados will have many ,if not all ,of these tracks but if you are a newcomer wanting a good starting point you would be hard pressed to find a better -or more reasonably priced - one .If on the other hand you just want a collection of songs played and sung to perfection ,this is also the one for you . It's a no brainer either way . Enjoy .

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Starting Point, 27 May 2014

Is this a complete overview of New Orleans' bubbling musical underbelly? No, no it isn't.

What his is though is a great jumping off point for anyone interested in the man and varied sounds of the Crescent City from the likes of Louis Armstrong (here featured in a recording from 1927) to Fats Domino to Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack. Sure some newer artissts are noticeably absent, but you'll find them in your own time if you want to (and if you're too lazy then look up Kermit Ruffins, Wynton Marsalis, HJon Cleary and Meschiya Lake as starters).

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential listening - get down to original flava!, 26 April 2014
This review is from: New Orleans - Blues, Soul & Jazz Gumbo (Audio CD)
This album is simply 'raw' the production on the tracks tells it as it is. If you have an interest in Jazz, Soul, Blues (basically the bedrock of most contemporary music) this album is for you. Great hidden gems alongside more popular tracks. Saving up my pennies so I can do a trip out there and soak up the vibes. Just buy it - no doubt!

It showed a very good overview of New Orleans jazz with original versions of some well-known pieces. It was just what I needed to hear before my visit to the city this summer.
