5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, nasty and very, very good horror/thriller
The story moves at a cracking pace and in the early stages has some very unpleasant elements which as it is about a woman being kidnapped by people wanting to rape, mutilate and kill all on camera for a snuff movie is no surprise. This is certainly not a book for everyone, some of the things described in this book are pretty horrendous but I found it compelling to read...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun gory read...with a sad thoughtful finale!
Not a bad little read if you like your horror more of the visceral variety. Lisa Miller is kidnapped by some thoroughly nasty "snuff" movie buffs and they are planning to have her as the next star attraction!, but she manages to escape...and rather unfortunately (now this is really bad luck) is kidnapped again by the same nasties! Personally I don't really enjoy graphic...

The story moves at a cracking pace and in the early stages has some very unpleasant elements which as it is about a woman being kidnapped by people wanting to rape, mutilate and kill all on camera for a snuff movie is no surprise. This is certainly not a book for everyone, some of the things described in this book are pretty horrendous but I found it compelling to read and no matter how horrible events get I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. There are some flaws, a few characters espouse their life stories in rather clumsy ways but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's nice to have a horror/thriller that goes down such a dark and nasty path. J.F.Gonzalez is an author to watch.

Personally I don't really enjoy graphic horror, and am more a fan of the soul searching depressive yet highly emotive writings of Greg f Gifune, Kealan Patrick Burke, and Gary McMahon (hurrah for the British!) to name but a few current dark fiction authors. Having said that Survivor is a fun "no-brainer" easy little read (albeit a little gory in parts)My favourite character is Mabel Schneider, a little old lady of 80 something who enjoys the "snuff movie" scene (will it's a hobby and it keeps her active:) and has a penchant for eating human eyes...lighly boiled with a little salt....everyone to their own taste...and that may give you and idea of the direction this book takes. It's fun but equally forgettable read with a thoughtful ending, which I will not disclose, but fits in nicely with the general theme of the book.

This is eye opening, you know stuff goes on like this - but the way J.F. Gonzalez puts you right in the middle of it all with the smells, the sounds - disturbingly amazing read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book - but not a great edition, 4 May 2013

I first read this book in 2006 when it was printed by Leisure & I loved it. It's extreme but not simply for the sake of it, it has heart and it is quite moving at times. I am also a fan of Deadite press...however...

The cover states this is the authors preferred text & in the preface he says this edition should be considered definitive as it corrects a number of embarrassing errors that were in the previous Leisure edition. It does correct some errors but inserts a whole bunch of new ones that were not in the Leisure version. For example one character who only knows another by the surname Smith suddenly starts referring to him by a first name she is not aware of & wasn't using in the previous paragraph. In the Leisure version of the same scene this doesn't happen so why was it changed for this edition ? Is she suddenly psychic ? On many occasions character surnames change & then change back. It makes for a jarring & confused read. Throw in a few layout issues (text over a chapter number for example) & two chapter thirteens and Mr Gonzalez's claim this edition has corrected all embarrassing errors and is definitive seems somewhat hollow.

Anyway the actual story itself is great & I consider "Survivor" to be one of the best horror novels of the last ten years. I would however recommend the Leisure version over this one and I hope one day a truly definitive version will see print.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need to read this, 10 Jan 2007

This book is immense. If you like horror this book is a must read. Its not a book that will suit everyone but it's definately one for the hardcore horror fans. If you haven't got a copy of this book you need one.
