1.0 out of 5 stars Below par
I have read many books by Stephen Leather and have greatly enjoyed them to the extent that I have recommended him to others. This however was a real disappointment. Missing was the page turning excitement of a really good thriller which makes it hard to put down. Missing was the clever plot. In their place was a trivial tale that was both unbelievable and frankly...

2.0 out of 5 stars A valuable taster, 26 Jan 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Cursed: A Jack Nightingale Short Story (Jack Nightingale Supernatural) (Kindle Edition)
A valuable "taster" for the Jack Nightingale series of books by Mr Stephen Leather.

Valuable in as much as it should alert the unwary and help them avoid wasting money on them.
(If you like Mr Leather's style then this short will delight you.)

Up to about location 500 is irrelevant window dressing. It concludes, thankfully, about Loc 813.

Compare it to Thinner or the 1p version and see which you prefer. CW.

Great story with a very weak ending. Disappointing. Have read many Stephen Leather books but this didn't live up to my expectations.

Okay as a short story , but found it at time confusing and a little bit flat and far fetched.

1.0 out of 5 stars Racist and offensive, 26 Jan 2012
This review is from: Cursed: A Jack Nightingale Short Story (Jack Nightingale Supernatural) (Kindle Edition)
A wonderful, lovely police officer is evicting "gypsies" from their home at Dale Farm and is cursed to die by an evil old Romani woman. Because we all know that travellers are murdering, evil sorcerers... Honestly, I found this story ignorant and offensive. Black people also get a brief passing mention in this story - "Four black men shot two other black men and a dozen black men and women swore blind they didn't see a thing... Welcome to multicultural Britain."

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good read from Leather, 3 Jan 2012

A good short story from Stephen Leather. A topical read and very enjoyable - read in under 1 hour but that didn't matter as it was fast paced and kept my interest to the very end.

He's a clever guy is Stephen Leather. A writer of entertaining novels he also understands the opportunity that e-books present, so here is a free taster to warm you up for the next Jack Nightingale story. Here we have a topical story where a Police Officer dealing with the Dale Farm travellers has been cursed by a gypsy and Jack may be the only one who can save him. It's short and sweet and with a clever solution and certainly does whet the appetite for the new book, I'm lucky enough to already have a copy and this short story was the perfect way to build the anticipation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cursed by Stephen Leather., 24 Jan 2012

If you haven't yet read Nightfall or Midnight by Stephen Leather then this short story, I hope, will entice you to do so.
It is a free, well written story that will only take an hour to read and it has a well constructed theme with a nice pace to it.
I would recommend people read not only this but the other stories in the Jack Nightingale trilogy.
Stephen Leather is a prolific author having written not only the iconic Private Dancer but the Dan Spider Shepherd series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a free download, 20 Dec 2011

It is good to see a free short story from an established author.
This was quite enjoyable. It wasn't amazing but it is competently written and the storyline is well worked out.

The story is topical with a gypsy curse being given in the Dale Farm Evictions. However it is quite clichéd and the diatribes against political correctness and multiculturalism do get repetitive. There is nothing wrong with having them in a book but you really don't need that many to make your point.

This is a quick and easy read and as it is free I will give it a generous four stars.

Edit: As it is no longer free I have changed my rating to three stars.
