4.0 out of 5 stars Weird And Wonderful, 13 April 2012

This review is from: Nature's Weirdest Events [DVD] (DVD)
We have all seen shows about strange phenomena around the world, fish falling from the sky, that kind of thing. What sets this one apart from the vast majority,is that it doesnt just report these happenings,it gives you the reasons why these things happened.Solid scientific facts replace guess work and absurd theorys, for the most part anyway. The subjects covered range from the above mentioned falling fish,to why the Australian city of Sydney turned crimson, and the frankly creepy parasite that lives in the mouths of some fish.Actual footage is used whenever possible,so you know what your watching is the real deal, and not just story telling.

On the downside, while I dont doubt Chris Packham's knowledge on all things to do with nature, his presenting skills are a little lacking. It has to be said he is a tad flat,he doesnt really engage you,its like he is reading from cue cards the whole time he is on camera. Not that he is on camera much, because this series suffers from the disease that seems to be striking down all directors of these kinds of programmes. The inability to keep the camera still and keep things in focus.Your listening to one of Mr Packhams links between segments, while watching his blurred feet walking down a corridor,or looking at a stuffed animal in the foreground, while he is out of focus in the background. Before he is zoomed into focus, and then back out again in a matter of seconds. This is when the camera isnt swinging wildly about from side to side, like its caught in a hurricane,or the cameraman has had one too many at the BBC bar.

On the whole its a pretty good programme though, which,if your into this type of thing, you should enjoy.Dispite the terrible camera work on the links.

Bought this for myself and lent it to my nephew. I was however disappointed that not all of the episodes aired on the TV were on this DVD. There were basically on 2 episodes where I think the TV had at least 6 of them. Many of the stories I had seen on TV weren't on the DVD and hope that there will be more DVDs of this program to come.

problem is the presentation . the subject matter is padded out with sensationalism i found it a bit repetitious but would suit a grand parent wiith an eight year old as it covers interesting things world wide and it offers many good opportunities for further exploration and embelishment.

Purchased this as a stocking filler for a friend's child who is interested in this type of thing. Hadn't realised it was a series on BBC - might look into buying more of them - really interesting stories and very educational.
