Now I was rather taken with the last Karfagen release, "Solitary Sandpiper Journey", but this new release sees him taking a sideways, backwards step into the world of instrumental prog, always a tricky beast to get right. Granted, the music hasn't strayed far from his roots in the seventies music of Camel, Greenslade and their ilk, but you need to have a mighty fine hook to pull it off, without recourse to a chorus.

And he manages to pull it off. Karfagen is basically Antony Kalugin, along with whoever he feels will benefit a project, and this one sees him pull in Alexandr Pavlov - guitars, Oleh Prokhorov - bass, Sergii Kovalov - accordion, and a few others to help him on his way. Kalugin says it's "a reminder to all who endorse and savour instrumental art-rock from 1970s, something like Camel, Focus, Happy the Man and Pat Metheny", and he's pretty much bang on the mark. Chuck in some Ukranian folk and a wee bit of jazz fusion, and you're pretty much sorted. Some of the music benefits from the addition of a string section and a woodwind section, and it's beautifully arranged and produced.

A lot of the music is surprisingly gentle, with the twists and turns of musical pieces such as "The Cosmic Frog & The Beast" and "Journey Through The Looking Glass", replete with delicacies for the ardent progger out there. I know the idea of a wholly instrumental album puts off a lot of people, but this is the sort of thing that gives prog a good name, and comes with the highest recommendation for those who like their prog rock spiced up with a bit of seventies art rock.

Contrary to what Mr. James wrote, I think this is a fantastic cd. Especially the two epics are phenomenal. Kalugin is a great composer. A real gem of instrumental progressive rock, nothing less!!
