'Ignition' is the first EP of the supergroup Unisonic and it surely marks a promising start. Unisonic is comprised of Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Place Vendome), Kai Hansen (ex-Helloween, Gamma Ray), Mandy Meyer (ex-Krokus, ex-Gotthard) and Dennis Ward together with Kosta Zafiriou (Pink Cream 69, Place Vendome).
The EP starts off with 2 strong album tracks and contains also a song in demo form and a live song.
"Unisonic" is a short, up-tempo power metal number with a dose of hard rock. The song features an energetic groove, masterful guitar work, very strong melodic vocals and a catchy chorus. This is the natural choice for a single and a future live classic. "My Sanctuary" is a slower paced melodic rock song. The verses are filled with guitar leads and the chorus is a vocal highlight and catchy as hell. The song also features a very fitting solo section and a slower bridge that will work wonders in a live setting.
'Ignition' continues with the demo version of "Souls Alive". The song is mid paced, contains 2 solo sections, truly outstanding vocals, an atmospheric bridge, an addictive chorus and is the closest one to melodic power metal. If the demo version sounds that good then the album version will be excellent. The last song is a live rendition of the old Helloween classic "I Want Out", recorded in Loud Park Festival. This song is proof that Unisonic is a strong live band, that manages to pull off a very energetic and fast version of this anthem. Michael Kiske sings this track for the first time in 20 years and does it very convincingly.
All featured songs are memorable and especially the new material promises something fresh. The band didn't try to recreate the old Helloween sound; they rather focused on quality hard rock with addictive melodies. I personally can't wait for the release of Unisonic's full length debut album in March!
