Didn't really work as a 'murder mystery', not much suspense. The romantic aspect of the book was more believable but didn't really hit the spot for me.

While not exactly a sequel, this book follows on from "Sex and the Serial Killer" which won the 2006 Daphne Du Maurier Award for Excellence, was republished by Silhouette as "Sex in the suburbs: Volume One" and most recently came out as a Kindle e-book under the title "She's Gotta Be Mine."

"Fool's Gold" was the second of five quirky comedy romances which this author has so far published under the name Jennifer Skully. These are -

1) Sex and the Serial Killer
* (A.k.a Sex in the Suburbs: v. 1 (Silhouette Special Products),
* a.k.a She's Gotta Be Mine (A sexy, funny mystery/romance, Cottonmouth Book 1) (Cottonmouth Series)
2) This book, "Fool's Gold"
3) Drop Dead Gorgeous
4) Sheer Dynamite
5) It Must Be Magic

These books are not part of a series, and each stands on its own with one partial exception, which is this book. One of the main supporting characters of "Sex and the Serial Killer" is the hero of this book, "Fool's Gold." Shortly after the conclusion of the first book, Sherrif Tyler Braxton (Brax) goes away on holiday to stay with his sister. A few of the comments in "Fool's Gold" refer to events in the previous book and might be considered mild spoilers for that book. So if you are minded to read both the "Cottonmouth" books, e.g. "Sex and the Serial Killer" / "She's Gotta Be Mine" and this novel, tackle the former book first.

Brax arrives at the home in Goldstone of his sister Maggie to find that her marriage to her husband Carl is in trouble. He can't fully understand why; one possiblity is that his brother-in-law is having an affair with the town's so-called "Porn Queen," author Simone Chandler. (She has acquired this nicknme because she writes custom erotica on the internet.)

When he meets Simone to investigate, Brax soon decides that his brother-in-law is not in fact playing around with her - but he can't get her out of his own mind, a sentiment which is reciprocated. Then one of the characters in the book turns up dead in unusual circumstances - and Simone's famous and overbearing mother turns up very much alive - and suddenly things get even more complicated ...

One of the good things about Jennifer Skully's books is that you can't usually tell what's going to happen. When similar situations arise in more than one of her books, it's quite possible that they can turn out one way in one novel and the opposite way in another. The villain or villainess is rarely who you think it's going to be. But you can rely on it that the outcome will be manic, sexy, and funny.

These books are capable of providing amusement to readers of both sexes; I originally bought all five of these books as presents for my wife and ended up reading them myself.

If you like a quirky, funny, madcap romance novel, you will very probably like "Fool's Gold."

N.B. Jennifer Skully also writes under two other pen names; as J.B. Skully she has written the "Max" series of dark romances which begins with "Dead to the Max (Book 1, Max Starr Series, an erotic paranormal mystery/romance)"; as Jasmine Hayes she writes or contributes to adult fantasy books such as "Resolutions," "One Night Only," "Somebody's Lover" and most recently "The Principal's Office."

5.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable read a mix of suspense, sex and comedy moments, 12 April 2014

This review is from: Fool's Gold (Cottonmouth Book 2) (Cottonmouth Series) (Kindle Edition)
Having enjoyed Cottonmouth book 1 She’s Gotta Be Mine, I didn't hesitate in getting book 2 which is more as a follow on rather than a sequel. This a funny entertaining read, there's lots of romantic/sexual tension happening between Brax and Simone. I liked the characters and had to keep reading to see what happened to them all next.I empathised with Simone's character because of her overbearing domineering mother then she comes to stay with her poor downtrodden sister and her mothers PA/driver.
It was nice to see the sheriffs character develop and enjoyed seeing the different characters and how they worked within the story. I've enjoyed her books so much that I got the Max Starr series (reviews for those coming later)Jennifer Skully also writes under two other pen names; as J.B. Skully she has written the "Max" series of dark romances which begins with "Dead to the Max (Book 1, Max Starr Series, an erotic paranormal mystery/romance)as previously mentioned and Jasmine Haynes, The Girlfriend Experience series West Coast series and others.I really enjoyed both books in this series & would recommend them as fab holiday books or poorly in hospital they got me through a rough time in ICU.Enjoy.......

Having enjoyed cottonmouth book 1 I didn't hesitate in getting book 2. It was nice to see the sheriffs life progressing within book 2 as I certainly had a soft spot for him from the first book.

A surprise for me at the end, I didn't guess THAT was going to be the out come!!!

Really enjoyed reading this second book in the Cottonmouth series. As readable as the first. The blend of saucy (but not overtly so) writing combined with a perfectly credible murder theme makes for a great holiday novel. Not too predicable and not at all complex. I really enjoy Jasmine Haynes's style of writing and have just bought another one for my next trip.
