5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously good.
This is a great debut Lp, which comes across as a more commercial, funked-up Beta Band high on indie grooves. It's quite an achievement for any band to release a 12 track album with no filler or lulls, but these boys have done it.

The vocal arrangements are done to perfection, and the whole thing a wondrous journey of psychedelic inventiveness. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the year, 15 Feb 2012

Great debut album - really new sound. Stand-out tracks are the foot-tapping Default and the atmospheric Life's a beach. Can't wait to catch them live.

Speculative purchase based on good reviews and liking the track Storm. Bit disappointing though, at it's best this is reminiscent of a happier more upbeat Beta Band however the songwriting is not up to the same standard and some tracks are really poor - Zumm Zumm in particular has me reaching for the skip button. In the end it stars to feel like a rather long 50 minutes. Nice grooves but not enough strong songs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sounds like a lot of other things, but never itself., 31 Jan 2012
This review is from: Django Django (Audio CD)
The rather smug art pop of Django Django sounds quite interesting on the first listen, but soon quickly induces yawns rather than a sustained foot tap. After a couple of listens it becomes clear that pretty much every sketchy Talking Heads meets Mali Music pop song starts off with a woozy analogue synth sound, to be followed by live percussion and rather dull (I think they were going for understated) vocal melodies and rather trite lyrics. Nothing stays with you as such.

Sure, there are some wonderful audio references in here; parts Ennio Morricone, parts David Byrne and Brian Eno's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts", parts Franz Ferdinand, parts Modern Lovers - but these are only collaged, collected nods to other artists rather than individual, innovative new songs by Django Django. It sounds like a remix record with the songs taken out, and gives the overall impression that time will see a lot more other acts with a "Django Django remix" on their EP, rather than another improved release by the band themselves.

This seems to have got some cracking reviews, and well done to the band, but it is not going to last - this feels overtly like the music press desperately needing a "new act", and nothing about Django Django is new, or lastingly impressive.

7/10

Description of the music? Nah, just listen to the sound clips.

Starts off amazingly with Introduction, Hail Bop, Default and Firewater then badly loses it's way with Waveforms (bad),Zumm Zumm (dreadful track!) and Hand Of Man (really naff). It then goes patchy for the remainder of the album. Love's Dart, WOR, Life's a beach, and Silver rays all work well, Storm and Skies Over Cairo are amateurish.

Don't bands/record companies actually listen to the proposed album before putting it out? Even really good albums suffer from so called 'filler material' but some of the stuff here isn't even B-side material. Write more stuff, and choose the best material for the album. This suffers from being rushed, IMO. Shame.

Very good in parts, but ultimately this album is a frustrating listen.
