5.0 out of 5 stars The Perils of Being Too Beautiful
Set in a Sicilian village during WW2, "Malena" is a thoroughly enjoyable movie which showcases the many talents and charms of Monica Bellucci, who plays the glamourous wife of an Italian soldier. Lusted after by men and envied by women, Malena has to adjust to life on her own after her husband is called to fight in North Africa. Her solitary status becomes the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Ruined by censorship
In a world where we are served up a daily dose of quite graphic violence in our movies and entertainment, it is always so disappointing to see the American and Uk censors at it again. This what was a simmeringly hot portrayal of boyhood lust, obsession and discovery has had a massive 20 minutes slashed from it which is totally unacceptable.
Belluci is the sexual...

2.0 out of 5 stars Dirty Old Men....,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What is it about ageing directors who resort to making their movies dirtier when their once brilliant imaginations have dried up?
Here, Tornatorre, having made probably the finest and most loved world cinema film with Cinema Paradiso, gets as graphic as he dares. The unashamed sexuality of its title character and continual sexual acts get repetitive and coarse. I'm certainly no prude and enjoy nudity as much as the next man, but when it replaces talent, no. Cinema Paradiso contained many thoughts and sexual fantasies but they were cleverly sewn into the story, without brazenly shouting them.
Another favourite (Spanish) director of mine, Julio Medem, who used sex and nudity quite a lot, and really well, simply went for soft-core in place of original ideas for his 'Room In Rome'. And, famously Bertolucci lost many fans and alienated many others when Marlon Brando so graphically seduced Maria Schneider in Last Tango In Paris.
I'm sorry boys, this titillation is just embarrassing, for its director mostly. That so much hinges on it makes for a poor film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic arthouse charm,
By A Customer
Malena is a charming film about teenage angst and lust in a world of adult prejudice. Set in a small Italian village during WW2, it tracks the story of a 12 year old boy who falls in love with the teacher's beautiful married daughter.

1.0 out of 5 stars 105 min 'uncut' version,
How anyone can sit through this Italian codswollup without falling asleep or hitting fast forward is beyond me. The worst Italian film I have ever seen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't understand the interest of this movie,
I watch it as a friend lend me the DVD. As far as I am concerned I do not understand the interest of this movie, I was almost stopping it. I do not understand why the first love and pulsions of a young guy are interesting, and furthemore the way they describe malena is a cliché...
The pretending historic background has no interest since it is not developed at all.
The movie take so much time for saying nothing.
As a conclusion, I prefer paying for stupig movie which will distract me and not this one which bored me. I would not recommand it.
