I read this book in a couple of days and was very pleased with the refreshing attitude adopted by the author. The book covers many different angles to finding winners and the amount of research and results he has gone through really impressed me. You will definitely find at least one or two angles to use and look into further. For me, the parts about horse racing speed ratings really got me excited and have since looked into this more and more with great success so far. Excellent book overall.

I have read most books on UK racing and betting (everything from the tail end system to class pars to winning without thinking) including a couple by this writer. I think this is the best book around on this subject, or at least the best book since winning without thinking. His earlier books (against the odds) did contain too much details at times (and the print was too small), this is a lot lighter, pithier and easier to read. I basically read it on holiday
The book is in two parts preceded by a long introduction about the modus operandi of serious betting, which is mostly common sense but is pretty much essential reading unless you're a professional gambler already or a bookie! I partly agree with / disagree with one of the other reviewers who said the content was similar to the first version. The first half of the book is basically an overview of the factors which backers consider when they make a bet, yes similar to the original 2003 against the odds book but an update version if you will. The second half is a list of about 100 systems and angles for finding winners posed as simple questions "does it pay to back 2yos with an early foal date..." etc etc. mostly he is able to provide neat answers to these and pass on some good information. This material is entirely new, although the bit about cheltenham trends is similar to an article in smarter sig magazine. Overall it's easy enough to read, passes on the "Mentality" of finding profit really well and as I said there's nothing better atm in the UK market. Certainly worth reading a couple of the US books if you haven't already- start off with Beyer and then maybe Davidowitz but even the US books from the mid90s seem current in terms of their approach. A couple of good australian books around too. The best work on UK spread betting market for horses (which sadly is not what it was) is priest's last book - Against the odds 3rd edition. There is nothing about spread betting in this one.

Picking Big Priced WinnersThis is an excellent and original slant on horse racing. It slays much of the accepted wisdom on approaching selections for betting purposes. For example he looks at a popular system of betting ie the use of Trends and debunks some of the misleading information which may arise from using such a "winner-finding" method. There is a lot of food for thought in this book and the veteran and beginner bettor would do well to read it.

I would advise you not to buy this, particularly if you already have his 2003 book on horse race betting. You won't learn anything new if you have the earlier book. And you won't be joining the top 2% of punters if you do buy it.
