3.0 out of 5 stars OF MICE AND MEN
This is an odd combination of heartwarming friendship and crime. Danny (Stephen Graham) owes a crime boss big money. Joseph (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) is his mentally handicapped friend who is strong as an ox. Danny persuades Joseph to fight in underground cage matches to pay off his debt. This is something Joseph does not like to do.

They both meet girls to...

This film will make you laugh, cry, despair and give you hope! The acting is amazing and it is a pity it hasn't had a more widespread cinema release.

Prepare yourself as this is one of those films that stays in your mind after you finish watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some friendships are worth fighting for, 16 Mar 2012

Loosely based around Of Mice and Men, Best Laid Plans is shot in modern-day Nottingham. It's the story of the shady, coke-nosed, pot-headed, alcoholic Danny (Stephen Graham - Texas Killing Fields) and his mentally handicapped friend Joseph (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje - Eko from Lost).

Danny keeps Joseph around because he is a hulking giant, and that comes in handy when Danny needs someone to help with the 'heavy-lifting'. When Danny's wheeling & dealing land him in trouble with the local kingpin Curtis, using Joseph as a cage-fighter seems to be Danny's only option to pay off his debts. But just how much can man-child Joseph take? When Danny meets & falls for prostitute Lisa (TV veteran Emma Stansfield) and Joseph finds a kindred spirit in the equally handicapped Isabelle (Maxine Peake - Shameless) they both want nothing more than to escape the trappings of their life of squalor. But will Joseph's dream of a camper-van & endless fishing ever become a reality?

Best Laid Plans is a gritty, but genuinely heart-warming experience about no-hopers getting their last chance of reprieve and seizing it. There are several tear-jerking moments as we are shown the simple joys that Joseph experiences. Stephen Graham's portrayal of exploitation, guilt and concern for his friend is extremely touching making you love & hate him simultaneously and he is supported by an able cast throughout. Akinnuoye-Agbaje never goes overboard playing this role but this makes his character more believable and connectable. The entire thing is well-shot and directed (well done David Blair) making it a pleasure to watch the 103 minute experience.

Highly recommended for a quality British film that will tug at the heart-strings!

This is a really good British film with great acting and although it is a good thriller it has a more unusual plot than most. An enjoyable watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars A grim storyline, 2 April 2014

This review is from: Best Laid Plans [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
I enjoyed this film as it was recorded close to where I have lived and worked in Nottingham. That was interesting but the story was very grim and there is a lot of violence in the film. If you don't mind watching bare knuckle fighting you will like this
