Helen Dunmore is a stunning author and this short story is packed with tension and emotion. Florence has moved to the country with her husband and twin daughters. However, her husband is often away working and her daughters are very involved with each other. Florence has always felt safe in her isolated house, too far from anywhere to install a phone line and not even that close to the local village. However, she cherished the peace and the time that she has, until she is woken one night by the flickering of a torch. You really do feel for Florence as she is forced to creep around her own home, wondering how she can protect her sleeping daughters. The fear is realistic and understandable, as is the helplessness she feels. This is a story about how you can protect yourself and your family and who you can rely on. A short, but moving and thought provoking read.
