4.0 out of 5 stars Good Old Fashioned Crime Thriller
This film has an interesting plot, slightly different from most crime movies in that it is based around the world of smuggling.

The plot is tight, well plotted and paced, with quite a few twists and surprises.

The characters are well played by skilled actors, and you are not sure where some of them stand till the end of the film. This film is all...

3.0 out of 5 stars One last job
Some very good performances liven up what is otherwise a routine, run of the mill thriller. Mark Whalberg plays a reformed drug smuggler just out of prison and married who has to do one last job to help out his brother in law who has got involved with some very nasty gangsters and is in over his head. Yes it's the old honourable retired thief who has to do one last job...

This exciting remake is a fast paced caper flick with an unusual setting. The leads are appealing, although Kate doesn't have much to do. Mark Wahlberg is the everyman hero and can act tough as well as portray a characters more sensitive side. Giovani Ribisi is brilliant as usual as the psychotic bad guy (one of a few actually). The plot isn't particularly convaluted despite some of the theatrical reviews and although it isn't all car chases and explosions there's plenty action on offer when the interesting plot calls for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant From Start To Finish!, 27 Mar 2012
This review is from: Contraband [DVD] (DVD)
Mark Wahlberg stars as a posh 17th century English gentleman who must win the heart of a fair maiden who is intent on marrying the evil Lord of Winchester played by Rufus Sewell. Na just kidding; Mark Wahlberg stretching himself, L.O.L, probably only before he works out. Anyway back to the real plot Wahlberg plays a working class father of two forced into one last job. That's the plot! If your a fan of Wahlberg or the Wahlberg's in general (see his brother in the excellent Blue Bloods - Season 1 [DVD] and in the brilliant man-band N.K.O.T.B) then you'll love this. If there is one thing that Walhberg delivers everytime, on time, it's an awesome thrill ride. The one thing that sets this apart, make that two things is excellent performances from both Ben Foster (excellent also in 3.10 To Yuma [DVD]) as Wahlberg's bestest friend in the whole wide world and Giovanni Ribisi as the villian of the piece. When you go to films these days you usually see established actors hamming it up which completely ruins the movie think Travolta in Broken Arrow and The Taking of Pelham 123 although it did work in Face/Off but then again that was riducilious fun. These two are definately going to the top. One downside is the underuse of J.K Simmions as the Captain that is so bad he must be good. Plot twists and things you don't see coming makes this an above average action-thriller that has to be seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Crime Actioner, 13 July 2012
By
Mitun (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Contraband [DVD] (DVD)
'Contraband' is an action-crime thriller that released in 2012 to mixed response, however turned into a box-office hit. The movie is directed by Baltasar Kormákur who starred in the original Icelandic version titled 'Reykjavík-Rotterdam'. The original is one of the most expensive Icelandic films of all-time and released in 2008 to critical acclaim. On its release, 'Reykjavík-Rotterdam' won five Edda awards (Icelandic Film Awards), which included an award for best director (Óskar Jónasson).

The film tells the story of an ex-smuggler, Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg) who is forced into doing one last job by a drug lord (Giovanni Ribisi), in order to protect his family.

Yes, the plot is clichéd but it's a delight for an action junkie like me. It's a fast-driven taut thriller from beginning to end. There are exciting action set-pieces, enough suspense and the feature is beautifully shot with cracking sweeping shots of New Orleans, Louisiana and Panama. With a few added twists, I'm a happy man.

The film has a good star cast with Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Kate Beckinsale and Giovanni Ribisi. All perform well and equally stand-out.

The direction by Baltasar Kormákur reminds me of the golden action movies of the 80's. Kormákur comes up with a typical yet cool and effective action offering.

I'm a big, big fan of James Horner who has provided exciting background music for so many action movies in the past. Clinton Shorter on this occasion does a fab job by scoring a James Horneresque background music, tune to my ears.

'Contraband' is an energetic action flick.

Very disappointed with this film, the trailer shows a high speed roller coaster of action.....what you get is 45 minutes of waiting in the queue then a flash in the pan action scene. Way too slow to start , Kate Beckinsale is again a non descript character that never has more than one sentence to say with jer usual bland expression on her face. Walberg seems bored buy it all as well. It took two attempts for me to get through this........slow and boring......but see for yourself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where was Steven Segal?, 16 Aug 2013
By
Chris Morse "faraway_pictures" (UK) - See all my reviews

Think about it. This is exactly the sort of film Segal would have made 30 years ago. The no-nonsense type guy who gets things done, takes nothing from nobody, a real 1 man army.
But of course this isn't a Segal movie, it's Mark Wahlberg. And it's not half as good as it could have been 30 years ago with Segal!
Instead we have a gritty (for gritty read miserable looking place populated by miserable looking people), atmospheric (for atmospheric read every character must swear at least 2 times in every sentence whilst looking very serious) A to B type movie.
I don't mind these type of films but there was just so little to like in this film. The brother in law who'd messed up wasn't really worth the effort was he. None of them were...and sadly that means for me the film wasn't either.
I loved Wahlberg in Shooter, but he's so hard to like when he makes such a lot of dire movies.
