5.0 out of 5 stars A collector's item!
When I first saw this film, it was before colour TV was widely available in Britain. The black and white version was like film noir; grainy, atmospheric and menacing. I watched it again this week, in colour. To my mind, it is not as effective. However, what is effective is the acting of Michael Caine. He plays a hardened London hit-man who returns to Newcastle in the...

1.0 out of 5 stars AVOID THE BLU RAY
Well after years of waiting, warners have screwed the release of this classic film by only having the dubbed us soundtrack and not the original british soundtrack
its poorly dubbed and ruins the whole opening scene.
even the commentary by director mike hodges-ported over from the dvd release has him saying he doesnt like the dubbed version..

5.0 out of 5 stars The Original Gangster Number 1, 20 Dec. 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Get Carter [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Get Carter. Michael Caine plays Jack Carter, a Hitman from the East End ganglands of London. He makes his journey to Newcastle to find out how his Brother died. This is where the story really starts. The film cleverly weaves the story in and out of the seedier side of Tyneside, twisting and turning it, yet not to much to lose you or put you off...quite the opposite. In my opinion as I am sure of many others, this film is the best of British gangland movies, it has violence, sex and some of the best acting ever in a British movie. Follow that with an amazing eerie soundtrack, and a more unforgetable lines to qoute since the Italian Job. Get Carter is a must for anyone's video/DVD collection, not just because it is a truly magnificent classic British film, but anyone with an ounce of film interest would realise that this film will be remembered as one of the finest films of the century. BUY IT! if you never buy anything else again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Get Carter (3.5/5), 15 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Get Carter [1971] [DVD] (DVD)
Michael Caine stars in this revenge crime drama as a Gangster from London who decides to look in to the suspicious death of his brother.his investigation ends up ruffling some feathers, and Jack becomes a target.i won't say anything else about the story.you'll have yo watch the movie to find out more.i' will say that this is not what you would call an action packed movie.it moves at a moderate pace.it's not boring.things are always happening, just not at a frenetic pace.and every scene occurs for a reason, even if it doesn't appear that way.at least that's the impression i felt.but it's really the acting that's the anchor here.Caine is great as the title character who won't give up,until he finds the answers.the supporting cast is also good.for me,Get Carter is a 3.5/5

Basic DVD not much in the way of extras; but fine for the price. Bit of a palaver receiving it since it can via Amazon Logistics rather than Royal 'just put it through the letterbox' Mail.

Deals with violence and sex is a believable manner. Subject matter not for everyone but an excellent movie nonetheless.

This film is great and you can see its influence in films like 'The Long Good Friday', 'Gangster No 1', 'Lock Stock' etc. Caine plays a real hard-man who has a desire to right many wrongs. The film is set in 70s Newcastle and the city and its industrial areas make for a atmospheric picture.

What can I say.

Everytime this movie pops up on the TV channels I have to watch it. ( I don't have the DVD, only a well worn VHS tape )

The grittiness of the North East is portrayed perfectly in this film. ( I speak from experience because I know the area quite well )

Michael Caine and the cast put in a 1st class performance.

Even though you know what happens at the end of the film it is still a " must watch " movie.

If you die without seeing it you have missed a classic.

Regards,

Andy.
