Large sized mount, strong for medium sized cameras.
on 27 August 2014
This is quite a large mount compared to others I have tried and I would say it looks too large for something sized like a GoPro/J4000 aimed more at larger conventional sized cameras or maybe for external mounting a GoPro/J4000 with say the heavier weatherproof case on.
Initially I bought to replace a previous purchase of a different internal window cam mount which lost its suction due to the sun changing the translucent silicone (80mm) sucker to goo. This bigger tripod has the black glossy type plastic for the sucker (90mm) and I don’t think it will degrade in the sun. These suckers do need a perfect gloss finish surface to maintain vacuum, avoid the black dots around the window edge on some cars as these break the vacuum or finding a 90mm disc for dash mounting.
This new mount is larger than expected with its 90mm sucker and longer arm and no way will it fit behind my car mirror and I would say is too big for internal dash cam in my car (side by side picture uploaded). I can see why people mention that the geometry and window rake is such that it is hard to configure an upright framing. My dash cam had a frame holder with a thread top and bottom so more flexible combinations. The joints are very firm. The sucker joint is toothed so makes a solid joint when tight. The ball pivot is heavily grooved so also makes a firm joint when tight.
However I found an alternative method for the dash cam and now use this larger holder for heavier duty temporary applications. For instance I have used it for a temporary mount (+spare cam adapters) for a homemade 60cm ADS-B antenna fixing on the (cleaned) exterior glass of a Velux skylight. No I do not leave it there and have a safety cord as well.
Bigger than I initially needed but very useful for the price.
