Drop-in update for MacPro 1,1 and other Mac machines with 32-bit bios roms.
on 15 September 2014
I have just installed Lion on a 6 year old MacPro 1,1 -- first-generation Mac Pro -- that has plenty of life left in it and has been running Snow Leopard since I bought it. Snow Leopard is no longer maintained by Apple: security risks abound; Mountain Lion, Mavericks, etc will not boot on standard MacPro 1,1 (the firmware is 32-bit not 64-bit, and Lion is the last OS X that will boot on the bogstandard machine) and I didn't want to go through the pain of a non-straightforward boot / install process (though there is one). The Apple Shop will email you a voucher for Lion in the App store (in exchange for 14.00), but there are many complaints out there that once they sell you the voucher it's impossible to find the Lion. Having it on a (4gb) memory stick seems to have saved the situation, and it is presently downloading updates.
I will try to upgrade our 6y/o Snow Leopard Mac Mini in the same way:
