I know nothing about baseball, coming from the wrong side of the pond, but you know what, it didn't matter a bit. This book is very well written, with very believable characters, unusual story and so true to life on so many levels. I was impressed by the fact that the author did not go for pages and pages of graphic sex details. In a good book, I don't think that is a necessity. I learned something about reporting too, and that was a bonus! All in all, excellent. Can say more than that!
Lisa is a sportswriter who covers the city's minor league baseball team and freelances for the newspaper. She leads an easy life of covering sporting events and relaxing at the bar her best friend, Frankie owns. But things get complicated when Amy enters her world.
Amy, the all-star first baseman for a professional women's baseball team, dreams of playing in the major leagues.
While covering Amy's ascent through the minor league system, the out and proud Lisa finds herself falling for the closeted ball player. As they begin a relationship, Lisa realizes she's already given her heart away to Frankie. The problem is, though, Lisa's not sure the feeling is mutual.
In her quest to break through the gender barrier, Amy faces harassment from her male teammates. She's confronted with difficult choices about her sexual identity. Lisa is torn between supporting Amy in her struggle and acknowledging her true feelings for Frankie. Meanwhile, Frankie has her own demons to face as painful physical and emotional scars from her past haunt her.
