TOP 100 REVIEWERon 10 December 2011
For some reason I never picked up this game when it first came out. So when I found it on sale I was tempted. And, as Oscar Wilde has cynically observed, the only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. So I allowed myself get pulled into the gravity well.

THE FABRIC OF THE SPACE-TIME CONTINUUM IS BEAUTIFUL
SINGULARITY runs on the Unreal3 engine and this means that water effects will make you reach for a towel whereas flames will remind you you are playing a game. However, both the environments and the objects are very nicely designed and attention was paid to details one may or may not observe the first time around. I particularly appreciated the retro Soviet era paraphernalia scattered around as well the hollow boasting the characterized the era.

BENDING REALITY TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
The game is a thinking gamer's FPS. Besides the usual survive-and-shoot-everything-that-moves fun, it offers a number of physical and tactical puzzles that can be solved by going back or forth in time. You can "rejuvenate" supply crates to replenish your ammo or bridges to go across; alternatively, you can dilapidate rooms or doors with age to find or gain hidden exits; or you can manipulate the environment to make your enemies vulnerable. It will take some time to figure out the hints but once you get the hang of it you will notice where to apply your time-manipulating powers.

THEY AIMED AT REALISM IN A GAME WITH TIME-TRAVELING AND MUTANT MONSTERS?
There are many guns in the game, most of them very imaginative in design and masculine in sight. Unfortunately, you can only carry two of them. This may be much more realistic to the impossible load than, say, Gordon Freeman can carry in HL2 but come on now guys, we popped the cherry on realism long ago. Right after the first time shifting wave and just before your first albino mutant!
And, to add insult to injury, the game is inescapably linear to the effect that most areas cannot be revisited once exited. So, make sure to loot everything and try to plan ahead on which guns to choose before moving on.

THE ARROW OF TIME STOPS FOR NO ONE
This is where the game looses a star in both fun and overall: gamer saves are not allowed, there are only checkpoints - and not many of them, at that. Now, because the game is also somewhat short I strongly suspect this was done in order to artificially prolong the gameplay time by forcing the player to start over from a not-so-near checkpoint whenever the hero dies. And since reaching a checkpoint and automatically saving your progress...erases older saves, one cannot go back and replay a favorite part or approach a situation with different tactics.

RADIATION: MINIMUM. PROCEED WITH CAUTION
The game uses SecuROM as a simple disk-check and requires neither activation nor any perpetual online reauthentication. It is the same DRM used in Fallout 3 and I find it borderline palatable. Certainly much better than If however, you object to SecuROM altogether, you can now make an informed decision.

A solid game now well worth its admission price.

Slight sound set-up niggles aside (mine would only work in stereo and not in 4.1, 5.1 etc) the game has much going for it. The plot is pretty much old style bad against good with mutants, difficult BIG monsters to sort out and Russian army forces too. Weaponry is very good and also imaginative, I won't spoil it but the projectiles' view is awesome as it speeds toward the poor doomed enemy. The plot is slightly mad, but this is full on fiction with no pretence otherwise and once you get going it's obvious that if it moves you kill it except for the nubile that graces your screen from time to time - well done to the team for crafting her; wonder why they didn't make her really ugly, but they never do, do they! Back to the game, sometimes difficult to see what you are meant to be doing and where you are going, remember the F key and magic footsteps appear to guide you out of the maze of destruction. So, all in all this is a great fun game and a bit of a blast from the past. Graphics are not Crysis 2 but they are still very good, no need for £300 Graphics Card here. I would love to see a sequel; the story has potential to run on a while yet. At the current asking price, this is a bargain and a fun one at that.

First and foremost this is a well thought out FPS, which is fun to play all the way through. It has an original story line with the USP being a time changing device that zaps objects and enemies in interesting and with the latter, fatal ways.
The graphics are brilliant - lots of variation, colours, textures and lights. The controls are simple to master, the path is linear (not a bad thing when it is done this well) and the overall product is complete.

The few grumbles are (i) the game is quite easy with lots of ammo, health and upgrades lying around; (ii) you can only carry 2 guns, which is silly. Why include all these amazing and fun to use weapons if you can only carry 2? The result is that you stick with the trusty shotgun and assault rifle for 95% of the game as they are good enough for any bad guy and there is plenty of ammo.

But . . I still give it 5 stars . . why? . . because I enjoyed every minute of the game and it has the most 'wow' factor I have seen for a long time.

At this price it is a bargain - enjoy

Its a bit linear but better then many (metro etc). The graphics are good as well. The story is very Bio shock and they have clearly robbed blind at this angle but it does deliver. The time ply element works but in some cases makes it too easy - esp re ammo. Overall a good idea that is reasonably executed - worth a punt at the current price.

This review is from: Singularity (DVD-ROM)
A good game with excellent graphics and good action. However the lack of a user save process does make the game tedious. The only save is the automated save and as another reviewer says, this deletes all previous saves. You can't go back and unlike for example DOOM3 where you can replay sequences that are challenging or enjoyable this is a one way street. Get it wrong and you are stuffed - back to the start and who wants to do that every time, go through the tedium of picking up all the bits again and playing everything from scratch including the initial helicopter crash - BORING. I played Doom3 multiple times with different weaponry and options - even though the graphics are not a patch on Singularity it really was value for money, this is not. The other problem is using the keyboard and mouse does limit the ability to hit multiple keys when needed, something not apparent on a games controller. What otherwise would deserve five stars gets one. Obviously not written with the PC in mind this really is a retrograde step. There is a very long winded way round the lack of saves - when the application states "saving game do not turn off your computer" (or words to that effect), wait until the game restarts and then exit the game. Go to the Singularity file in My Documents (Windows8 just Documents) Highlight the file 'Singularity/RvGame/SaveData/Player0.ue3profile', copy it and paste it to another folder in My Documents called say Singularity Saves, at which point you can rename it with something meaningful. If you want to go back just save the current version in the same way and delete it, paste the file you want back to the Singularity folder and rename it Player0.ue3profile. Cumbersome but it works.

A fun shooter. It's storyline sounds like a cheesy X-Files episode - you are a US Marine sent in to investigate a decrepit, abandoned Soviet-era research facility on an island off the coast of Russia. Once there, its clear whatever experiments were taking place have left their mark - you're engulfed in white light and sent back in time from 2010 to 1950, in which you interfere with history... game on.

As corny as all this is, Raven - developers of plenty of solid FPSs like Quake 4, Soldier of Fortune and the later Jedi Knight episodes - do a good job of keeping you hooked, with various zany weapons, a healthy selection of soviet troops and mutants to shoot at and a cracking piece of gadgetry called the Time Manipulation Device - essentially a doodad fitted to your hand that allows you to speed up or rewind time on an object, as well as working like a gravity gun. All of this is portrayed via the versatile Unreal engine.

If you're after a solid and fun sci-fi shooter, get this. You won't be disappointed.

The story line and concept is so gooood! The graphics are really good, and the game is quite scary at times. Must buy especially at £7 who are you to even question the price! Buy it! The story line does not last long, or maybe I hammered playing it... It ends with a choice of who to shoot to decide the ending which is cool, in a way that should mean there is a 2nd game of this coming out. I hope anyway. Games like this get overlooked in favour of games like GTA or COD...... long live the PC.

Played this game on the 360 couple years ago and really really enjoyed it. It reminded me of wolfenstein which it would as its the same developers behind this game. If you like bioshock then you will love this. Hopefully they do another one but I doubt it as it was a underground kind of game.
