5.0 out of 5 stars Magoo, you did it again!, 11 Aug. 2014

This review is from: Mr Magoo: Theatrical Collection [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Shout! Factory have released the long awaited Mr Magoo theatrical shorts created for Theater.
These shorts and the character, Magoo were designed and the character was designed because most famous characters by other studio's were Animals, like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck etc. There were very few "Human" stars. So the idea of a grumpy old man was perfect and the formula works so well.
UPA studios brought forward this "Modern" design, a lower budget they had, but the style of the animation works so damn well. Why draw such detail? When you can draw a little and get the same end result.
In this collection you get a singular box set, an average box with 3 discs with 3 disc holders. Each disc has a Play all, with optional subtitles, a episode selection and extra features.
But you also get a second dvd with the feature length Magoo film, 1001 Arabian nights. A film that was trying to compete Fantasia and Snow White. The first of a few Magoo films. The film isn't bad, the animation is fantastic and the restoration on all the set is beautiful. The film drags a smidge, but its an entertaining film.
Over all, you get Jim Backus (Famous for Gilligans Island) giving you the amazing voice of Magoo. A character that will always live on, because we all know a Magoo. You can see the development of the character in animation and personality.
So, if you appreciate the lesser known "Anti-Disney" (I say Anti Disney because most of the UPA artists were ex disney workers) and you love good animation and fabulous voice acting, for a great price get this set.

Bonus features include:
Vintage documentary A Princess For Magoo: The Making Of 1001 Arabian Nights.
An interview with film critic and historian Leonard Maltin.
A Documentary on UPA & Mr. Magoo.
An Art and Photo Gallery.
14 audio commentaries by UPA animator Bob Longo, Emily Hubley, historians Adam Abraham, John Canemaker, John Culhane, Mark Evanier, Jerry Beck, Michael Schesinger and Tee Bosustow, son of UPA founder Steve Bosustow.

GET THIS SET! 1949-1959. The best Magoo years.

At last, what Magoo fans have been waiting for, the original Mr Magoo cartoons, as seen on cinemas during the 50s & early 60s, some of them in CinemaScope, as well. Forget the 1960 Magoo TV cartoons, this DVD set is the business.
