5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the Wombles, 30 Nov 2011

If you are discovering the Wombles music for the first time, or wish to rediscover it as an adult, this is an excellent introduction, comprising a number of chart hits from the Wombles heyday in 1974-76 along with tracks from their four albums - 20 tracks in all. Incidentally, it is the full hit single version of the Wombling Song (Underground Overground)and not the shorter and sparser arranged TV version that is on this album.

It is no exaggeration to call the Wombles the Beatles of Bubblegum, though they might take offence at the word "bubblegum" as it ranks high on their list of least desirable things to tidy up as it can get stuck in one's fur and be a real bother to remove! This is clever and inventive pop/rock spanning many musical genres with top notch arrangements and production. The lyrics reflect a Womble's worldview but it's not just for kids, though that was the original target audience. Their much anticipated live performance at Glastonbury played to a packed tent of adult fans and became one of the highlight performances of the festival.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Wombling, 29 Nov 2011
This review is from: The W Factor (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for myself as I have been a lifelong Wombles fan. After their appearance at Glastonbury this year, I have been following their plans on Twitter. I am absolutely delighted Mike Batt has revived and dusted down the `old Womble musicians' after all these years. This album of 20 Wombling Greats brings back many happy memories from my childhood and also brings about new ones for a new generation of children. The Wombles are the original Eco-Warriors and still on trend for the 21st Century.
These compositions are not just `pop songs' but if you listen carefully they cover many genres of music from Rock and Barbershop to American Country. So release your inner child and treat yourself and your children to this delightful album which will make a fabulous stocking filler.
You should also make a point of watching The Wombles recent performances on utube - Christmas and Glastonbury 2011. Their wardrobe mistress is excellent as is their makeup! The old Womble characters are just the same quirky ones invented by Elizabeth Beresford, (sadly no longer with us) and will certainly delight young ones and older ones too if they dare to admit it.

The Wombles came around in the 70's my kid's were 8 & 6 years of age .You never seem to discard things from those years , you kept the "dolls" of the Wombles and put the old 45's away . Now in 2000 the Grandkid's have come along and out comes the "dolls" a the 45's , the only thing that's not there is the record player , thank goodness for c/d's ! Nothing like introducing a new generation to the fun that Mum & Dad had when they were kid's Oh yes and the Grand parents remember the songs as well ! Happy memories buy and enjoy .

Yes they are back, with this brilliant 20 track retrospective culled from their four original albums. The re-mastering of the tracks is even better than on the recent Dramatico albums re-releases earlier in the year, they have never sounded so crisp and clear. It inevitably leads with the best known track "Remember You're A Womble" and gives us the hits of 1974 / 75 such as "Banana Rock", "Minuetto Allegretto", "Wombling White Tie And Tails", the iconic theme tune "The Wombling Song" and of course "Wombling Merry Christmas". Mike Batt's strength in writing and producing the Wombles catalogue was his spot on pastiches of many musical styles so we get "The Orinoco Kid" as a tribute to the Spaghetti Western movies, a James Bond homage "To Wimbledon With Love", accapella harmonies "Down At The Barber Shop" and the amazing Oriental flavoured rocker "Invitation To The Ping Pong Ball" which for my money equals "Remember" for catchiness and is indeed the hit single they should have had if only CBS had had the confidence to release it as a 7 inch vinyl back in the day. Nice to see Mike Batt picking out a few tracks from the Wombles debut album on here too, he has always criticised it's production values because it didn't have the budget of the later three albums. However, time is a great leveller and in fact these songs stand proud with all the others on this collection as brilliantly inspired pop masterpieces. A re-evaluation of The Wombles output has been long in coming but with their critical success at Glastonbury and a new generation tapping into the sheer exhuberance of the pop vibe, The W Factor is sure to be heard blaring out of many a house over the coming months.
