This book is essential reading for Christian men everywhere. Hughes pulls no punches as he examines areas of life which are vitally important to the spiritual welfare of today's Christian man. Among other topics examined are 'The Discipline of Purity'; 'The Discipline of Fatherhood'; 'Discipline of Mind'; and 'The Discipline of Friendship'. Hughes' approach is at once biblical and practical, detailed and fundamentally readable. For those men who desire greater inward purity, Christ-likeness, practical godliness and relational effectiveness then this book really is a must have. Quite literally a life changing book on personal and godly discipline.

This is a book to put some spine into flabby Christian men. The christian life cannot be allowed to wax and wane according to our emotional state. Discipline is needed and taught here in godliness, purity, marriage, fatherhood, friendship, the mind, devotion, prayer, worship, integrity, the tongue, work, perseverance, church, leadership, giving, witness and ministry.

The author writes with a popular challenging style using many illustrations.Sometimes it sems a bit too American but this does not get in the way of the real spiritual challenge communicated if we are to be disciplined Christian me. This is a much needed book which will be studied with profit by any man. There are practical questions for discussion as well as book recommendations from leading Christians. One minor niggle. How did he do a chapter on leadership and omit being a servant?

I have had a lot of trouble finding a good solid devotional book for men; I thought I had found the best when I came across Jim George's book called A Man after God's Own Heart, but I was wrong. The book Disciples of a Godly Man really does exceed A Man after God's Own Heart by a jump. Don't get me wrong, they are both a good read and are challenging; however Kent Hughes goes into depth where Jim George is lacking. Kent Hughes touches on topics such as godliness, purity, marriage, fatherhood, friendship, the mind, devotion, prayer, worship, integrity, the tongue, work, perseverance, church, leadership, giving, witness and ministry. He communicates brilliantly with illustrations, and does not simply focus on the practical elements of a man's life like some other books do, but he also examines and digs into the spiritual and biblical as well. As a compulsory read at Bible College, I would not remove it from the reading list anytime soon; one would find it hard to locate a better volume of personal devotions that also has companion volume for women which is written by Kent's wife Barbara.

I have recommended this book to a number of my friends and the feedback I receive is always positive. This is a book for Christian men who are serious about maturing in their faith. It pulls no punches (in fact I sometimes found it uncomfortably challenging) but provides a Biblically sound exposition of what it is to be a Christian man. It isn't negative though and I found it very motivational. I am pleased to highly recommend it.

Our group decided to look at this book. Personally I find its thinking so American as to be almost unusable. Sorry if this offends my transatlantic friends, but if you have a fundamentalist view, and go with hard line interpretations of scripture, then you will love this book. I prefer something more thought provoking, educative and nuanced than this in-your-face presentation.

In my opinion, this book is written for the younger person, because of the style in which it has been written. With some pages displaying up to 5 exclamation marks per page, he tends to make what he is saying sound less serious and almost like he is telling a joke. The over all content is good, but could be written for a wider age group.

great book for any and every Christian man wanting to serve His God-the practice of godliness-work and discipline-no easy way to success in anything and that holds good in the spiritual/moral realm. Also has study questions for personal or group use.

Superb book that should be read and digested by every man in the church.

In manages to administer a proper rollocking without being even slightly legalistic.

An absolute must read.
