5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, dark and thoroughly intriguing
I hadn't seen Mardock Scramble before buying the BD release, so purchasing this was something of a gamble - and having now watched the film, I can say it was a gamble worth taking.

An engaging story of despair and retribution set in a dark, futuristic world, Mardock Scramble is visually fantastic. From the initial scenes of an almost Tron-like city, to a brief...

4.0 out of 5 stars The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo Meets Tron!, 25 April 2012
This review is from: Mardock Scramble - The First Compression [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This movie is...ok. It's not the best start too a trilogy (aparantly), but it is pretty darn good.
The film is about a girl named Rune Balot who is rescued after nealy being killed, and is givin a robotic body. She is then givin the choice to assist against the man that tryed to kill her.
Now I'm sorry for not going into any detail about the plot as it is a short film, and I don't want to spoil anything. But any way, the film is set in a Tron like world and carrys themes that are simular to the themes carryed in the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo; a girl that is confused and has been abused and violated by men. The film at times can be very violent and sexual to point that it can quite sickoning-depending if you don't like see alot of blood or if don't like seeing little snippits of other things.
The dub is also pretty good considering that there arn't realy many well known voice actors (or any that I havn't heard of) in the film. This DVD/Blu-ray disc set comes with both the theatrical and directors cut versions of the film, but the directors cut cersion is only availble in japanese; which is a shame.
Overall despite this being a good film, it's only one hour and five minutes not including the credits, and the extra scenes don't realy add much at all and their not realy that important. Not too mention that the ending leaves you on one big cliff-hanger that is just plain ridiculous, it's like showing an awsome fight scene then cutting to the credits before it actualy ends. If the second film isn't that much longer then they could have at least put them both together, plus it's length dosn't match up to the price which is far too high for a film that isn't that much longer than an hour. I recomend this film too both teens and adults, but I wouldn't recomend buying the film unless it's on sale for less than ten pounds; I mean the new Yu-Gi-Oh! movie was an hour long and it was priced at seven pounds, this is not that much longer. I would rent the film, watch it online or download it so that you can see the film first before wasting a ridiculous amount of money buying it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Film, 5 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mardock Scramble - The First Compression [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I'm a big fan of cyberpunk but this film is terrible!

The visuals I have to say are stunning and I like the city, lighting and mood of the film.

Without dropping any spoilers on anyone who wants to waste money on this film, the story line is silly!

Seriously, whoever thought of a talking mouse as a main character must have been smoking crack?

The brief "bad guys" that appear are so silly it sums the whole film up!

I mean come on, really COME ON! They are more comical then actually bad, at least it made me laugh.

To sum this film up - looks goods, great animation but let down by silly silly characters and a talking frecking mouse!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing., 20 Mar 2013
Having read magazine reviews and watched trailers for this film I was very interested in seeing it.
However, having been bought it for Christmas I was very disappointed.

Firstly I feel I should explain that there are two version of the film on the dvd; a theatrical release and a directors cut.
I watched the TR first and it made absolutely no sense. I watched the DC straight afterwards. The DC, as mentioned in magazines, cuts out some of the more graphic scenes but it also cuts out far too much of the plot.

It's a very stylish film, visually very stunning.

I personally did not like the gore and violence, and there is some very nasty "messed up" characters and scenes. It's not for the faint hearted.

I did feel that this movie was all style and no substane. I was hoping for something for a little more depth, instead there's just a lot of scenes of the main character (a young girl, former prostitute murdered by her pimp and brought back to life by a scientist) wearing very little or in the shower. For someone who complains how tired she is of men lusting after her she wears a lot of skimpy outfits...

Having been let down with this film I don't feel inclined to watch the next two instalments.
