Sons of Anarchy
on 21 March 2013
If you've never seen it SOA (or SAMCRO--Sons of Anarchy, Motorcycle Club, Redwood Originals) is a series about a hells angels type biker gang in California. It is slightly similar to the Sopranos in style (ultra violent action mixed with dark humour, great characters and real drama). This seems a little darker and at times a bit more OTT but it is still a class show.
There is a great depth, as the lead character, the young Vice President Jax (who is not quite ready to take control) vies for power with his step-father, Clay (Ron Pearlman--who is just starting to get too long in the tooth to run the club). Caught between them is Jax's mother, Gemma (the excellent Katey Sagal--Peggy Bundy for those who remember Married with Children!). It gets even more complicated, for Jax's real father was the president before Clay (before he died) and wanted to guide the club away from guns and crime (whereas Clay didn't). Jax finds and reads his father's memoirs and starts to take on his father's ideals, so there is real animosity building between the two men (and the scheming and manipulative Gemma).
Add to that a range of top notch supporting characters, dark politically incorrect humor, plots that include weapons smuggling with the IRA, disputes with rival biker gangs, local police and small-town politics, the increasing influence of drug trafficking in rural America, white supremists and on and on...
All in all this is a great and entertaining crime show and if you liked The Sopranos, you'll probably like this too (likewise if you like SOA and never saw The Sopranos, they're very similar in style). Just wish there were more programs like this around (I hate all these dreary modern PC dramas that have no real characters!!!).
