5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Film, Definitely Worth Seeing!, 13 Jun. 2012

'So Hard to Forget' is about a middle aged teacher who, after a painful break up, ends up on the coast living with two friends. The arrival of one of their cousin's Helena sparks a new chance at love for Julia, who had otherwise resigned herself to being alone forever. I personally found the story poignant and one which is rarely looked at... being able to fall in love again, and the misconception that it can only happen once. The story was beautiful and the scenery just gorgeous, I thought it really set the mood for the somber story which felt so real and true. Would definitely recommend this!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!, 1 July 2012

Recently saw this film and thought that this was a fabulous, thought-provoking tale of a woman finding a way to get over the end of a long relationship. The actress playing the main part was fabulous, her pain was brilliantly portrayed, and the cast surrounding her were brilliant too. The film, could have ended not as abruptly as it did, but you can't have everything.

Great movie. Actors were awesome. Kinda sad at first but honest about breakup feelings. Funny parts too. And lovely lesbian couple. Spoiler alert: some people have said it's not a happy ending but I think it is ambiguous enough to leave their relationship open to possibilities. And I'm a romantic so I always assume they will find each other in the end even if we don't get to see it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Re-lighting the fires, 28 Oct. 2014
This review is from: So Hard To Forget (DVD)
What was fascinating about the film was the examination of how a positive attitude to life can lead to self-healing. The characters know sadness, selfishness, mental isolation at first before the ice thaws and the sun shines on their lives again.

Julia, a University professor of English literature, has been dumped by her lover, Antonia which had left her in an embarrassing financial mess. She thinks the best way to cope is to shut down and freeze out emotion. Her friends Hugo and his sister,Lisa try to take her out of herself by moving to a house by the sea. There can be a new life for them all there. Hugo's lover has died and he is emotionally drained but still manages to keep Julia on an even keel. Lisa's lover has left her pregnant and this becomes the first juncture in which Julia unfreezes a little when she comforts her after an abortion. The first positive signs emerge.

Into the mix comes Carmen,a student of Julia's in a study of 'Wuthering Heights' ; Julia suspects that Carmen, maybe, fancies her but remains cold and professional. Much to Julia's initial displeasure, Lisa's cousin Helena pays a visit. She is an artist recently back from Paris and of course comes with the implied baggage of bohemianism. She doesn't hesitate to tell Julia what she thinks of her uptight attitude. The sexual tension begins to stretch. Carmen visits the seaside home purporting to want help with her thesis, also bringing a boy friend who ends up being that with Hugo. Of course, Carmen fancies Helena too.

As has been said the film is a positive experience although rather driven by its dialogue and Julia's narration. The frissons of the changing relationshps, added to the sexual tension of potential couplings, certainly added some zest to the film although nothing was overstated. All the characters' lives have entered a new phase, dropping the sadness of the past for something which may make them happier and able to live in the real world.

... but moving on is worse which university professor Julia realises when her lover Antonia leaves her unexpectedly and without further contact. Fortunately, Julia has a good friend in Hugo and, as he is going through a period of mourning his lover, he is understanding, but also realises that the most important thing is to change from the environment in which Julia has memories of Antonia, so he suggests that they move in together in a house by the beach with his hippie friend Lisa, who is also experiencing relationship issues.

Julia is still struggling and not doing too well in work either, but when Lisa's cousin Helena comes to visit, Julia's outlook on life changes slowly and she comes to realise that maybe it is possible to love more than once.

I thought the acting was very strong throughout although the wallowing in self-pity was almost too realistic and it started to grate pretty quickly, but I think it was important to show just how far Julia moved from the breakup point till she was ready to think about moving on again.

A slow, slightly drawn out, melancholic, but also ultimately quietly optimistic movie that is worth a watch.

I have watched this one online, so I cannot comment on any DVD extras. The is a Brazilian film, so it is in Portuguese with English subtitles.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very touching movie, 27 Jan. 2014

I choose this movie at first because of the story between these two women and i like the fact that it takes up the subject of moving on after a hard breakup with someone you have loved and been with for so long and to learn to trust and love again that can be quite hard to break that protective wall you been building up after feeling hurt.

4.0 out of 5 stars So Hard To Forget movie, 11 Mar. 2014

I like the gritty reality of this film. It is able to explore the truth of the characters pain and sadness. It does not try to be roses and romance all the way which is more like real life. It is an enjoyable movie. Not one for those who like a glossy romance which is pure fantasy.

It was ok and had some beautiful women in it. However, it didn't have much of a storyline and was a bit slow and hard to follow at times
