Greatest Jazz Divas, 75 Original Classics, NOT3CD073

CD 1 has a running time of approx 72 minutes and covers the period 1942 to 1961 with the bulk of recordings coming from 1956 to 1959. Jazz Divas presents the best of the performers and a very wide range of the classic jazz and popular song book with many definitive performances. The earliest track is of Lena Horne singing "Ain't it the Truth". This is not just a collection of well known names like Dinah Washington; Nina Simone; Lena Horne; Anita O'Day; Ella; Sarah Vaughan; Billie Holiday; Rosemary Clooney; Peggy Lee, etc but also a show case for the vocal talents of such as Nancy Wilson; Eydie Gorme; Abby Lincoln; Etta Jones; Donna Hightower; Dakota Staton; Ernestine Anderson; Chris Connor etc.
CD2 runs for approx 74 minutes and comprises songs from 1955 to 1960 with the late 50s taking centre stage. CD3 runs for approx 71 minutes and covers the period 1947 to 1961. The bulk of recordings are from 1956 to 1959. Just picking out some fine singers...Nancy Wilson born 1937 and who is still performing some concerts is well represented and with a career that took off in 1956 and is one of the younger artists to feature. Legendary voices such as Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday are instantly recognisable. Etta Jones 1928 to 2001 was said to be a best kept secret and is represented here on 3 tracks My Heart Tells Me; That's All there is to That; Where or When. Annie Ross features as does Dame Cleo Laine.
The liner notes are by Michael Heatley and the packaging is well illustrated and years of recordings and composer credits are included. The 3 CD set provides 75 tracks with the sound quality being mainly excellent with a couple of rare Donna Hightower tracks having a little noise. Approx 217 minutes. Certainly a CD set well worth buying and a great addition to the Not Now Music catalogue too. As always excellent value.
