2.0 out of 5 stars Lasted just over a year
Like a lot of reviewers I was impressed with this player at first, particularly for the price. After a few months, though, glitchy little niggles started to creep in - discs (Blu-ray and DVD) not reading at the first attempt, or freezing momentarily between disc chapters. 5.0 out of 5 stars budget player?, 28 Dec 2011

Have read some 3 star reviews of this and believe they have un-fairly marked this player down because it doesn't have features that it never even claimed to have...

Just got this today for the sitting room, checked that it can play the most common types of video files that I enjoy, and can confirm that it does indeed have a very good blu-ray player function, as well as playing .avi and .mkv files perfectly. I didn't even have to adjust any settings for audio or video resolution, it auto detects what your TV screen can handle I believe, for mine it set it to 1080p 50hz and 2 channel audio... I do most of my movie watching in another room on my PS3 and bigger audio 5.1 system, but after using this today for even 10 mins or so I like this better than my PS3 for playback, so may have to even buy another one for that room and just leave my PS3 for gaming instead.

The boot up time of this player is pretty much instantaneous, if I had to hazard a guess maybe takes 5-10 seconds from hitting the on button to choosing which type of file you want to play in the menu. I updated the firmware also to the newest version found on the LG website, put it on a USB stick, booted up the player and inserted the drive, it then tells you it's found the update and confirm that you want to update the firmware... approx 10 seconds or so later it's done and rebooted the system.

The negative reviews about this are mostly because it doesn't have networking functions such as wifi, ethernet and therefore no DLNA support either.. for me this doesn't bother me, I have a USB 3 hard drive and I load the files onto that to playback on the blu-ray player.. even for approx 20-30GB of files it only takes approx 5 mins to transfer from my PC onto the USB3 hard drive, so while I'm waiting I make a cup of coffee or whatever.

I only paid £42.95 delivered for this excellent piece of equipment and in my opinion is worth way more than that even... fast boot up, quick disc load times, plays many types of video and audio files both from dvd/blu-ray discs or USB devices (supports both FAT and NTFS format drives), plays subtitle files too.. ahven't checked out all the different types of video/audio/subtitle files it will handle yet, but give me time.

5.0 out of 5 stars It plays Blu-rays!, 16 Jan 2012

I read a lot of reviews before deciding which player to buy and there are so many negative ones out there for just about every machine. Things like

"The player doesn't have DNLA ...."

"This player takes more than 10 secs to boot it's an outrage"

"This player doesn't let you view iplayer"

... and the list goes on.

Am I confused? Isn't the job of a blu-ray player ... to play Blu-rays? With a good quality HD 1080p picture? This machine does that!

If thats what you want, if you want to buy blu-ray discs and watch them on your TV then this machine does it nicely. Not the fastest machine in the world, it's not loaded with bells and whistles. It has no ethernet connection.

I love it!

It's cheap!

It plays blu-rays!

Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Blu-ray Player, 18 Dec 2011
This review is from: LG BD650 Blu Ray Player (DVD, DivX, DivX HD, Full HD 1080p, HDMI, USB) (Electronics)
Bought this LG blu-ray player for my secondary HDTV set up and it's great.
The blu-ray picture quality is fantastic, very sharp and detailed.
It also does a good job of upscaling DVDs too, delivering a pretty decent picture.
It doesn't come with a HDMI cable however so you will need to buy one separately.
Overall a great player, recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars My First Blu Ray Player!, 30 Dec 2011
By
This review is from: LG BD650 Blu Ray Player (DVD, DivX, DivX HD, Full HD 1080p, HDMI, USB) (Electronics)
Picked this up this morning, and it works perfectly- I was so impressed with the picture quality.
As a huge film fan, but one on a budget, this is my first step into the world of Blu Ray
(about time!) and its a great place to start.
All I want it for is to play Blu Ray discs and DVDs, nothing more.
I tried out Final Destination 5 BR and it looks stunning, razor sharp picture,
no blurring even in the busy opening set piece, whilst the player itself was nice and quiet.
I also tried a few DVDs in it and they look better than ever, all up-scaled brilliantly.
So I'm happy to keep them and not have to upgrade all my films like I did from VHS to DVD!
Seriously impressed with this little machine, the remote control is simple to use also.
A perfect first step into the world of Hi-def.
Note: It isn't multi-region and it doesn't come with a HDMI cable- I had to pick that up separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!, 7 Jan 2012

This review is from: LG BD650 Blu Ray Player (DVD, DivX, DivX HD, Full HD 1080p, HDMI, USB) (Electronics)
I bought this Blu Ray player because I wanted a player that could read and play video files on an NTFS formatted external hard drive (HDD).
I wasn't disappointed. This little baby reads with ease the 1TB Western Digital and Seagate hard drives (HDD) I connected via its USB port.
It plays all HD video files that I tested (DivX HD, MPEG-4 TS HD, AVI, MTS, MKV, HD WMV etc.). It's also a good looking Blu Ray player- small and compact.
It plays video files and discs quickly and is whisper quite during playback.
I didn't need Internet Video/Content (YouTube, LOVEFILM, BBC iPLAYER etc.) on the Blu Ray player as I already have it inbuilt in my Sony TV.
Playback quality, DTS audio format and up scaling is fantastic. I can say with confidence that the LG BD650 is better than the SONY BDP-S185, from my experience.
The user interface and, updating the device, via the USB port, are simple. Its `Auto Power Off' feature is also much liked.
The LG BD650 is 100% recommended

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid blu-ray player, 29 Dec 2011

This is a great entry level blu ray player;

It starts up and loads blu rays quickly, and is virtually silent whilst in operation. Sound and picture are both good from the player, and it does a decent job of up scaling DVD's also. The menus are incredibly intuitive and initial setup is simple. Be sure to check for and install the latest firmware to avoid any problems though.

This is an entry level model, and so doesn't have the networking abilities of better models, or other 'luxury' features, but it does everything you would expect of it. Also, be warned that it doesn't come with an HDMI lead so buy one of those too. Another small gripe I have is the very poor "simple manual" that is provided - meaning that you have to visit the LG website for the proper manual.

All in all it is an excellent entry level machine, and great value for money

Such an execellent return for such minimal financial outlay. Easy to plug in USB memory sticks so can watch blu-ray films via disk or memory stick.
Can play avi and other DivX media aswell.
Excellent.

A really good BluRay player for the price.
The reproduction of BluRay discs on a 1080 TV is excellent, and sound is amazing through a high-end audio system.
The inclusion of a USB input is good for playback of audio and pictures, as well as video.
The only (minor) downside is there is no separate Digital sound output, so DTS or Dolby CD's can't be fully exploited, although the analogue output gives a very acceptable result.

And that's not with heavy use. Now, after 13 months (so out of warranty) and the various downloaded updates, the player will no longer read DVDs at all. (Perhaps I should've done more independent research, as this appears to be a not uncommon LG owner grumble.) You may take the view that the low price justifies the inbuilt obsolescence. Personally, I'm going back to Sony and the LG is in my bin if anyone wants it.
