This CD release is a good compilation of 80s tracks. But there are thousands of them out there. There is nothing new here. But worst of all the title is "Alternative 80s". Why?
The tracks are not alternative to the mainstream pop of the 80s becuase in fact they ARE the mainstream of pop tracks of the 80s. And they are the actual single tracks that made up the mainstream of pop of the 80s. They are not even alternative mixes or versions.
The title is misleading but it is a good 80s compilation. But whats new?

I am in complete agreement with the other reviewers. What is so alternative about this collection? The thing is, I am not totally surprised. the Electronic 80's Anthems have equally curious songs that come under the 'electronic' banner. It appears that anything goes, and if the band uses synthesizers then it somehow qualifies them as being 'electronic'. I mean, Human League, Ultravox, Visage etc..yes, certainly! But Simple Minds, Billy Idol and Blondie, as great as they are, do not in my reckoning qualify as 'electronic'.
On this collection, maybe they are talking about alternative as a music genre, but what does that actually mean? It was supposed to be a type of alternative rock that originated from punk according to wikipedia. On the likes of iTunes it appears to apply to anything that's not pop, rock or R&B!(Loosely!) The eighties, however, were alternative by their very nature. The richness of the charts was that it was packed full of rock, pop, metal, rap, hip-hop, ska, reggae, synth-pop, electro, mod, rock 'n' roll, soul, new romantic...I could go on. This is where this collection doesn't make sense, as many of the hits on this album were mainstream hits, and the musical style was not necessarily 'alternative' as a genre. You could call Simple Minds' 'Theme for Great Cities' alternative, but I'm not sure I would refer to Duran Duran as alternative? Hmm...confusing...

I've really enjoyed the previous compilations in this series - Anthems - Electronic 80s and its follow up are both pretty good - so I was expecting something interesting here, especially given the 'alternative' title.

Unfortunately Alternative 80s has been compiled by either a) the work experience or b) the office goldfish or maybe even c) a computer algorithm. Alternative? It ain't. Also - annoyingly - for a Ministry of Sound compilation it doesn't flow very well . It's like throw a load of Now That's What I call Music MP3s up in the air and see which ones land first.

A wasted opportunity here, Ministry of Sound. You can redeem yourselves for the follow up though if you get on the case, get your worky (or goldfish)to look up 'alternative' in the Collins Gem dictionary and choose some proper tunes.

My alternative 80s would run more like this:

Disc one

Bogshed - Tried & Tested Public Speaker
Stretchheads - Long Faced German
Sudden Sway - Let's Evolve
The Royal Family & The Poor - We Love The Moon
Electro Hippies - Mega Armageddon Death pt. 3
John Cale - The Sleeper
The Bathers - Honeysuckle Rose
The Stupids - Live To Rock
Slurpy Gloop - Good Magnetism (Babe)
Lowlife - Ramafied
Billy Bragg - The Busy Girl Buys Beauty
Peter & The Test Tube Babies - Keep Britain Untidy
Blyth Power - City of Morpeth
The Fall - Ludd Gang
The Cramps - Don't Eat Stuff Off The Sidewalk
AR Kane - Crazy Blue
Cabaret Voltaire - This Is Entertainment

Disc 2
The Ejected - Have You Got 10p?
The Exploited - Jimmy Boyle
Half Man Half Biscuit - All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit
Clock DVA - The Hacker
Eyeless In Gaza - No Noise
Felt - The Final Resting Of The Ark
A Certain Ratio -Shack Up
This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren
Section 25 - Inspiration
The Wolfgang Press - Ghost
The Mob - No Doves Fly Here
Xmal Deutschland - Matador
APB - Palace Filled With Love
Skinny Puppy - Fritter (Stella's Home)
MC 900FT Jesus - I'm Going Straight To Heaven
PTP - Rubber Glove Seduction
The Blue Nile - I Love This Life
Microdisney - Birthday Girl

Disc 3
The Jesus & Mary Chain - Vegetable Man
Momus - Don't Stop The Night
Biff Bang Pow - She Haunts
Duncan Dhu - Sueno Escoces
The Bodines - Therese
Xymox - Evelyn
Stetsasonic - Just Say Stet
Cybotron - Clear
Spacemen 3 - Take Me To The Other Side
Bhundu Boys - African Woman
Les Thugs - Square of Lights
Easterhouse - Whistling In The Dark
Hard Corps - Je Suis Passee
Berntholer - My Suitor
The Dentists - The Best Of Everything
Galaxie 500 - Tugboat
Severed Heads - Dead Eyes Opened
La Souris Déglinguée - Varsovienne
Durutti Column - All That Love And Maths Can Do

... since there was more to the 80s than Baggy Trousers, after all.
