What is in it?

My vet said that my dog may have had an allergic reaction when recently his mouth and jowls became mildly inflamed. It started shortly after using this toothpaste and stopped after I reverted back to my usual brand. The vet suggested I compare ingredients panels to see if I could locate the ingredient for future avoidance. What I found concerning is that there is no ingredients panel on it as there are on other makes I have used. I am not suggesting this is toxic, but what if a child should swallow it and you need to seek medical advice - what is the first thing the Dr. will ask, what is in it? Which is exactly what my vet asked when I asked if it might be the toothpaste causing the allergy.
I wrote to Beaphar to ask that they print the ingredients on the toothpaste. Their response was that there was no legal requirement to display what is in their product, but it does contain:
"Anti-Plaque enzyme system - Protease and Glucose Oxidase - these work against the plaque formation and kill bacteria responsible for plaque.
Anti-Tartar components - Sodium tripolyphosphate and Zinc Citrate trihydrate - these reduce the formation of tartar.
Polishing Teeth - Hydrated silica - this removes the plaque in a mechanical way.
Chicken egg powder
Pork liver powder"
One other thing to consider; this is a very wet toothpaste. It will immediately start to run off the toothbrush and this may have an effect of how you normally clean your dogs teeth.
I originally gave this 1 star as I didn't like the fact that this information was hidden. Now I know what is in it I still can't say that I like the product, but at the same time I don't think it would be fair to give it one star because my dog had a reaction to it. At the current price of 3GBP this is good value for money compared with pet store prices and other brands and I do not doubt that it will help toward oral hygiene. If your dog doesn't have any known allergies to the ingredients then I would say give it a try.
I can see that I will be criticised for marking this down, but as far as I am concerned this product is 3 stars (it's OK), but to give it 4 or more I would have to I say that I like it - which I don't.
