Officially an animated band but well known to be a Damon Albarn outlet, the Gorillaz unleash a straightforward singles compilation after 10 years and 3 studio albums. Is there enough depth to make a solid compilation?

Yes, twice.

Firstly, there is the music on the CD. This is clearly for people who have heard a couple of the singles and enjoyed them, it's not been done to cash in on existing fans by including a remix or track not previously released. Yes, Doncamatic is only on this album, but is also available standalone. And, much as with Blur, when you trim some of the fat that lurked across the albums, quality remains. There are strong tunes throughout the album, there are basslines and beats to tap your feet and nod your head to. Would the Gorillaz have been musically successful if just presented as Damon Albarn and guests (and the contribution of the collaborators, guests and producers should not be overlooked) or if even these songs had been filtered through the prism of Blur? I think the answer here is yes.

And secondly, if you get the +DVD version, then you get much more - since the concept is an animated band, it is as good to watch the videos as it is to listen to the music as they bring the cartoon characters to life. And you can watch the budget visibly increase, from the first, fairly static show of Tomorrow Comes Today through to the live action, Bruce Willis starring Stylo. Plus, there are chances to see various live presentations of the Gorillaz music, these are both interesting to see and generally joyous affairs.

Is this album earth shattering? No. Will it change your life? No. But it might just enrich it a little - when you hear the cymbals crashing and bringing a smile to your face as they begin Clint Eastwood, or when you feel your feet start to twitch as Dare gets going, or when you get the tune from On Melancholy Hill on repeat in your head, and so on. This is an album of assured pop music from a master of the craft.

If this is the last we hear of the Gorillaz, then let's hope that Damon Albarn's next musical project is as fruitful.

For anybody who has ever just been curious and The Gorillaz and their music, this official compilation serves as the perfect starter pack, and is the best way to 'test the water' to see if you like them enough to buy the studio albums. You might be interested to know that there is also a double CD/DVD deluxe edition available: The Singles Collection 2001-2011, and the DVD contains the music videos for most of the singles, as well as live performances of 'Kids with Guns', 'Superfast Jellyfish', and two from television's the 'Brit Awards': 'Clint Eastwood' and 'Dirty Harry'.

The CD itself is perfect, containing every single from the three albums in chronological order, plus 'Doncamatic', which was a single-only release, and remixes of 'Clint Eastwood' and '19-2000', which were B-sides to the two song's singles. It's all the songs that you'll hear on the radio from such an interesting concept, a virtual band. Each song is an experiment and as such, this is a greatest hits album that was always going to be varied and wonderful, with the musical genres crossing through all of rock, alternative, Britpop, hip hop and electronic. 2D. The fictional musician provides the lead vocals, but really it's the genus that is Blur's frontman Damon Albarn, and I have to admit, I'm almost addicted to this man's voice.

One of the most playable albums in my extensive CD collection, 'The Singles Collection 2001-2011' is something I highly recommend you invest in if you like interesting, uplifting, and experimental music. My particular favourite songs are 'Clint Eastwood', 'El Mañana', 'Feel Good Inc.', 'Dirty Harry', 'On Melancholy Hill' and 'Kids with Guns'. The artwork of the album is also pretty awesome, and look out for some pretty decorations on the inside.

As the title would suggest, this is an excellent, straight-forward singles album!

I bought this in january and its like listening to a sunny day. Very imaginative, every track different and very laid back. The odd bit of swearing is a definite 'no never mind'.
