5.0 out of 5 stars Marius' Mules
Excellent series well written with believable characters and gritty realism in the battle descriptions. I am working my way through the series!

3.0 out of 5 stars Weak in the city
Slightly disappointed by comparison with Marius I and II. Turney is great at describing battles but the parts of this book set in and around Rome are weak. He does not seem to have studied city life in Rome in enough detail, especially when compared with the Falco books. An example is the paucity of household slaves throughout especially in the bath-house and...

As with the other books in this series - Enjoyed this book tremendously. Really captures the characters and places a somewhat different perspective on the Romans and how they conducted warfare - a very entertaining one with some good insights.

Loved the series - excellent read but I would recommend reading them in order so you understand how the characters evolve and for just under £6 for 3 books on the kindle you can't complain!! Book 4 perhaps? Please!

This series of books has really done the author credit,I just could not put them down and now find myself eagerly awaiting the next installment. The characters leap off the pages at you and you can be forgiven for drifting off in the mists of time and actually feeling like you are watching as an eye witness the events unfolding before you.Top quality entertainment that will keep you riveted.

Part III is as good as its predecessors. A novel based on fact, larger than life characters, lots of action. Unable to put it down.

A really good read so far, it is keeping me entertained so I will read the series right the way through from start to finish. But being even handed like other books of this period type sometimes they dwell on the politics a bit to much for me, but thats just me as I enjoy the military side more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maruis' Mules best, 18 Nov 2011

So far the best novel in the Maruis Mules series.

Standard pesky Gauls revolting under the rule of Roman authority (how dare they!), Caesar stepping in with trusty Fronto and other familiar tribunes. However this book has a major battle in the middle of the book, which means the novel is not leading up to a major barbarian kicking action throughout. This was a pleasant surprise

3.0 out of 5 stars Marius' Mules trilogy, 8 July 2012

This review is from: Marius' Mules III: Gallia Invicta (Kindle Edition)
At least by book 3 he's distinguished 'lightening' and 'lightning', but surely 'belay' is a nautical term far removed from BC Roman legions; one of several anachronisms. I accept that JC was an egomaniac using his decent grasp of generalship to make his name by conquest, but the idea that after a major battle with massive losses to men and equipment he could have his army on the move within a day beggars belief; as does 'the eaves of the wood'. A good yarn, increasingly unrealistic, and in places horribly ungrammatical and slovenly proof-read - if anybody even bothered.
