This review is from: Zoot Sims (Baden-Baden June 23 1958) (Zoot Sims/ Hans Koller/ Willie Dennis/ Adi Feuerstein/ Gerd Husemann) (Arthaus: 101710) (Audio CD)
Zoot Sims had it all: a rich, deep tone; an infallible sense of swing; a bottomless reservoir of improvisational ideas; and an earthy feeling for the blues. His abundant gifts are fully present and accounted for on this superlative new release from the Jazzhaus label. Recorded in Baden-Baden in 1958, the session pairs Sims with German saxophone titan Hans Koller, several other accomplished European musicians and American expatriate drummer Kenny Clarke. The program consists of familiar standards given fresh interpretations and beguiling originals penned by Sims and pianist Hans Hammerschmid. The music is relaxed, swinging bop -- no hard edges here -- but it's superbly performed and deeply felt. Sims and Koller are the standouts, each playing with robust lyricism and a keen regard for the material. Trombonist Willie Dennis and baritone saxophonist Helmut Brandt also make impressive contributions. Clarke, who helped invent bebop with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, holds it all together, driving the soloists with his relentless drive and nuanced counter-rhythms. An essential recording, one that instantly takes pride of place in Sims' pantheon.
