The story of Beatrice Cenci and her collusion in the murder of her father has fascinated writers and artists. This is Stendhal's translation from Italian into French of an account of the 1599 trial which saw Beatrice executed along with her brother and stepmother for patricide. Stendhal doesn't novelise the story so it is 'told' to us in a true crime fashion.

If you're interested in Beatrice Cenci, then Belinda Jack's book, Beatrice's Spell: The Enduring Legend of Beatrice Cenci, recounts the original story together with later receptions including that of Shelley.
