4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and unusual take on the Vietnam War, 26 Nov 2000

Of my collection of 460 books on the Vietnam War this is one of the more unusual titles. It centres on the relationship between the author and his war dog Caesar and their year together in combat. This is clearly a little known aspect of the conflict and that makes the book a welcome addition to the body of work on the Vietnam War. Readers new to the topic may also not know that the Australian armed forces made a contribution to the effort in Vietnam. The book charts the growth of the relationship between the handler and his dog. The relationship is not perfect and is not without strains but is nevertheless very close.
The author also proves the maxim that war is mostly long periods of utter boredom shattered by spells of sheer terror. He gives the reader a glimpse into the enormous stress of patrolling through a hostile jungle. Another interesting aspect of the book is the criticism of the Americans and their way of war. The Australians make great play of the craft of patrolling in the jungle, which is briefly quietly and carefully. The Americans on the other hand burst through the jungle.
I can recommend this book as an unusual take on the Vietnam War.If nothing else it shows that even in the midst of horror the relationship between man and his dog is still very special.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Vietnam War from the perspective of a dog tracker, 15 Aug 2012

This review is from: Trackers: The Untold Story of the Australian Dogs of War (Kindle Edition)
Peter Haran has produced an account of the use of tracker dogs by Australian units in Vietnam in this book, primarily based on his own experiences (and those of his team at the 2nd RAR), all the way from training in Australia, the deployment in Vietnam, and finally an epilogue of what happened to main characters (both human and canine) after the deployment.

Unlike in his other book (Crossfire-An Australian Reconnaissance In Vietnam: The Australian Reconnaissance Unit in Vietnam) the focus is clearly on the events in country, with much less being said on how the war affected the soldiers and how they coped with it afterwards.

The author uses a discontinuous timeline here as well, but it somehow works less well in my opinion, with operations and training being intermingled, and operations themselves going forward and backward throughout.

Overall the book is still a good read and it will give you an interesting account of this perhaps lesser known aspect of the war; of course dog lovers will get some satisfaction from it too (and may better understand the frustration with the poorly thought through policies of the Australian military on what to do with the dogs after the handlers' tours of duty).

If you are especially interested in the Australian perspective of this war, the author is a solid source and his writing will certainly not disappoint in this volume either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 21 May 2014

I rate this as being one of the best books I've read, aside from being a good book about Vietnam. Comes across as being a very honest and down-to-earth view of the author's experiences. There are times when the dark humour is laugh-out-loud funny and other very poignant anecdotes. Also see 'Crossfire' by the same author - it's just as good.

Peter takes you on a journey he transports you to another time where he has to rely on himself his training and his dog. It is all here the highs and lows of war from a different perspective. Peter describes vividly what it was to be a tracker from the training area south of Sydney to the jungles of Vietnam. A thoroughly good read well recommended

The Vietnam war was such lost cause, just like Iraq and Afghanistan. Thousands of young lives ruined with injuries some visible, others not. This book is one of the best I have read in a long time, had tears in my eyes when he had to leave his canine friend behind.

A great read that gives an insight into the life of a dog of war in Vietnam, well worth the purchase price. As a Labrador owner myself I could never imagine putting my boy through such an experience and then to have to leave him behind, that must have been heart breaking.
