If sound quality is all you care about then the two star review is about right. But if you walk away you'll be missing a wonderful, heartfelt version of this sublime piece, performed by some of the greatest singers of the last century.

I agree with both the reviewers who have preceeded me, the sound is rather distant and flat, as if at times coming from the other side of a curtain, but there are so numerous compensations provided by the standard of performances on offer here. This is a great work, arguably Bach's greatest and its beauty and brilliance are fullfilled by the singing and playing on this recording: a great shame if listeners did not give it a listen and judge for themselves. Sometimes, I feel that we have become spoilt by more recent standards of recording techniques at the cost of much that, whilst may not be aurally perfect, still carries the music where it is intended to go.
