5.0 out of 5 stars Great album for people looking for something new, not rehashed, 22 Nov 2011
This review is from: There's Always Hope, There's Always Cabernet (Audio CD)
I've followed Benjamin Shaw a fair bit. I haven't stalked him or waited outside his house, but I've seen a few gigs and heard his EPs and they deliver quite a refreshing holiday from a lot of the new folk and lo-fi hitting the markets. Instead of hitting the same notes as artists did decades ago and banging out traditional shanties, he's created his own sound.

This travels from eerie and haunting to a beautiful dreamlike quality that makes you feel when you listen to it that you've left the room for an hour and floated over somewhere a bit better than South London. He uses some unique sounds and samples, which comes together nicely with some minimilistic guitar playing and clear lyrics.

That's the main draw for Mr Shaw: his words. They're worth hearing and all the songs are thought out and well written. You won't find a single song about a lonely hearted break up or of sailing on seas he's never sailed on.

Worth hearing and worth owning. You'll like the art too. I think he did it himself and the imagery suits the work well. Just listen and enjoy something that you won't find under every rock. It's good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait, 23 Nov 2011
This review is from: There's Always Hope, There's Always Cabernet (Audio CD)
It took 2 years for Shaw to follow up on his debut EP I Got The Pox, The Pox Is What I Got but his first long player is well worth the wait. Beautiful and harrowing, deep seas of feedback and dissonance smothering the best songwriter in London.

Benjamin Shaw truly is the singer-songwriter for those who can't stand singer-songwriters.

All together now...

"You shouldn't blame it on the Tories, even if they're vile. You shouldn't fill their lungs with water, just to make me smile."

Love this guy's music. Very clever lyrics and distinctive vocal style. Reminds me of a cross between the Red House Painters and Mercury Rev.
