This review is from: More Brains: A Return to the Living Dead [DVD] [2011] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Over the years few eighties horror movies have stood the test of time quite as well as Dan O' Bannon's Return of the Living Dead. The perfect blend of horror, comedy, punk and gore. Always entertaining and endlessly quoteable it quite simply improves with age.

This excellent documentary from the makers of Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy [DVD] [2010] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] really is the last word on a cult classic featuring contributions from all the major cast, uniformly witty, entertaining and in the case of Jewel Shepard, downright insane. The old timers Clu Gulager, Don Calfa and James Karen are very amusing with Gulager and Karen in paticular mugging away in turn serious then deadpan funny. The punks including cult actress Linea Quigley, Brian Peck, Thom Mathews, Beverly Randolph, John Philbin, Miguel A. Nunez and the crazy Shepard, who O'Bannon cast after seeing her dance at a strip club are also charming, funny and occasionally volatile.

Added interviews with the underrated, now deceased O'Bannon. A troubled and sickly genius, plagued by poor health. Writer of Alien, Dark Star, Dead and Buried, Blue Thunder and Screamers O'Bannon was an occasional nut with dubious people skills who never quite recived the recognition he deserved. Beverley Randolph's reminiscence of arriving at O'Bannons house to attend an audition only to run screaming when confronted with a dark, empty living room full of guns and pornography is priceless. O'Bannon goes on to explain that he never liked to be out of reach of a loaded weapon since the Manson Family.

Featuring many more interviews including the Tar-Man (arguably cinemas greatest zombie), visionary production designer William Stout, grumpy producer Graham Henderson, the ever strained make-up effects crew and even the (send more) paramedics.

Throw in another two hours of extas including a decent retrospective of the paltry first sequel and the entertaining part three plus a twenty five minute final interview with O'Bannon where he also discusses the troubled production of his other film, the reletively obscure Lovecraft thriller Resurrected [DVD] [1991] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC], O'Bannon shows the softer side of an often misunderstood character and the finale of the interview is very touching.

So you've got a total of four hours of programme. If there's a downside it's the lack of clps from the movie may requre a quick viewing for those less familiar with ROTLD but hell, everyone should watch it at least once in a while, BRAINS, BRAINS BRAINS!

Fans may also enjoy the book. The Complete History of the Return of the Living Dead It covers a lot of the same ground but is the perfect companion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good documentary about one of the classic 80s movies., 17 April 2015
This review is from: More Brains: A Return to the Living Dead [DVD] [2011] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Very good account of how the Return of the Living Dead movies were made. There is an impressive cast call, with almost every original cast member present, including the main ones, James Karen, Clu Gulager and Thom Mathews. If you love the movies, especially the first one then you'll really like this documentary.

However it could have been presented a bit better. We keep switching at a rapid rate from actor to actor and especially for the first hour they don't have much interesting things to say. Gulager and Karen can light a room up and perhaps they just were not given the right questions to do so. It is still of course a very good and essential piece to have, the movies were great fun and it's great to dive in and go behind the scenes of all of that. It's 2hours long and gives us what we want. But it can't live with documentaries such as the Street Trash one and so on. Of course the bottom line is if you love Return of the Living Dead then you'll love this.
