Country of origin: China for an organic food product
on 23 February 2016
Main reason for one star review is Country of origin: China
The environment in which organic foods are produced is critical to the cleanliness of the final product. And environmental pollution in China is severe. China’s soil and water sources contain large amounts of heavy metals, like lead and cadmium, released by industrial wastewater. It may be this water that’s often used in “organic” food production in China. So even though the farmer is following organic process standards, he may be using irrigation water that’s wildly contaminated with metals, chemicals and even pesticide residues.
“China is a major producer of organic products, and there are continual questions about the integrity of products coming from China,” said Miles McEvoy, who heads the organic program for the USDA.
“We don’t trust, for good reason, the Chinese to supply ingredients for our dog and cat food,” said Mark A. Kastel, senior farm policy analyst at The Cornucopia Institute, an organic lobby group.
