4.0 out of 5 stars Nice camera, takes some getting used to., 23 April 2012
This review is from: Panasonic DMC-GF3XEB-KCompact System Camera (12.1MP, 14-42mm lens ) 3.0 inch LCD (Electronics)
This camera is capable of taking much better shots than a point and shoot, however it is not as easy to use. I have had it for a few months, and the only major criticism I would make is that the "intelligent" auto mode does not seem to be very smart when you are shooting moving objects. For taking pictures of people indoors without the flash you need to use the action mode, not the IA mode, otherwise they will all be blurry. Pictures taken with the flash do not look so great, so it is better to experiment and try using a higher ISO when indoors. In good light you get good pictures just by using the IA mode.

The camera itself is exactly the same as the other GF3, the only difference on the X model is the lens. I had read complaints online about this lens, saying that when the zoom is used the pictures are blurry. I have not found this, and perhaps it was fixed with a firmware update. However, if you plan to shoot movies, and the sound matters, then you need to buy another lens, unless you are going to use the manual focus. The auto-focus creates a clearly audible whirring sound every time it adjusts. I bought the 14mm pancake lens, which works fine for video.

The full HD video only records 25 fps and does not seem to give better results than the 1280x720 motion JPEG, but the latter is quite good.

I bought this camera because it is small, and it is certainly more convenient than larger DSLR's. However, because of the shape, it still does not compare with a mini point and shoot camera for portability. It is hard to find a case that is the right size for this camera, because of the shape. The Lowepro Apex 60AW works quite well, leaving a little empty space inside.

At the current price (around 500 pounds) you probably get better value by buying the camera with the larger 14-42mm lens and adding a pancake (or vice versa), rather than buying the X lens. The 14mm pancake is great for taking pictures indoors, especially of moving kids etc, because it responds faster than a zoom lens. But if the price doesn't bother you, then the X lens, being so small, is nice to have when you go traveling.
