3.0 out of 5 stars All the album are like movies
..Yes you can hear echoes of the movies soundtracks made by Newman..
The are jewel but he is not them an to make them commercial success..

For some moods, maybe with good cigar and whiskey..

The records feels like heavy red curtains and old oak floors..

5.0 out of 5 stars Randy Newman's Famous Five, 5 Nov 2013
By

This review is from: Original Album Series (Audio CD)
Let's get the gripes out of the way first. These albums are presented in cheap sleeves that are barely legible. The music is not remastered in any way and contains no bonus material. So you get the albums as they were originally released . Hence the title Original Album Series.
The music makes up for these flaws. Five albums full of classic songs performed in the way they were intended to sound. The first album has some overblown arrangements, but 12 songs and Sail Away are beautifully and subtly arranged. Good Old Boys is Newman's masterpiece and Little Criminals rounds off this collection and features the hit Short People. The Eagles make a guest appearance as do the cream of L.A.
Session players.

Randy's live show today features many of the gems on these albums. You will have to go a long way to find an artist who produced such a string of top notch albums as these efforts . Enjoy them at this price

4.0 out of 5 stars Arguably Newman's greatest five studio albums. No bonus tracks., 13 Oct 2011

Well, this is terrific one stop shopping: Randy Newman's first five studio albums. Arguably his best five studio albums, as well. At an excellent price. That's the good news.

The bad news? These presented in low budget mini sleeves and without any bonus tracks or liner notes. Some of these albums have been issued in "deluxe" editions with lots of bonus material. Serious fans will absolutely want that bonus material. But if you're a casual fan, or just want to see what the fuss is all about, you really can't go wrong with this collection, especially at the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Listening, 14 Dec 2011

Geoff Batchelor (Baildon, W Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Original Album Series (Audio CD)
If you haven't got them, these are essential listening. Don't be put off by the 'first five albums' tag: Newman was already an accomplished songwriter and on these albums he enters his prime. There are a very large number of astoundingly good songs on these: Davy The Fat Boy, Sail Away, I Think it's Going to Rain Today, God's Song, Jolly Coppers on Parade, Suzanne, Let's Burn Down the Cornfield, Cowboy and Texas Girl at the Funeral of her Father amongst them. Even the better known, but slighter, songs (e.g. Simon Smith & the Amazing Dancing Bear, Political Science (aka Let's Drop the Big One Now), You Can Keep Your Hat On, Short People, Mama Told Me no to Come) will make most other songwriters jealous. All brilliantly augmented by Newman's own wonderfully evocative arrangements. It's a steal at this price, so grab it while you can.

A very, very reasonable way of catching-up with his early material.
You will need a microscope to read the covers, though!

Ok so you get his first five albums for a tenner every one of them brilliant so you don't get bonus songs but your getting them as they were made that's two pounds a cd for five excellent albums by a lyrical genius in Germany before the war is worth the price alone plus your getting short people . Rednecks too many brilliant compositions to mention these would cost you a packet if you bought them individually do yourselves a favour if you like Randy Newman buy this

Always loved Randy Newman but never owned any of his albums (just listened to my brother's LPs).
This is a great way of getting into this genius songwriter.
Five brilliant albums and despite what one reviewer has written they are fantastic sound quality and superb value for money, don't hesitate to buy!
