Not genuine Cannon inks in the printer supplied to me,

Brilliant printer, easy to set up, software interface is superb and the quality of the photo prints is exceptional. The reason I have only given this a 4 star review is because the printer was shipped with NON GENUINE CANNON INKS. Yes the printer works fine, but nowhere in the description did it say it was shipped with copy inks. I don't know if this is right across the board with all printers supplied or just from printers supplied by "UK COMPATIBLE INK" (in hindsight the suppliers name was a bit of a give away) but be careful if you're expecting the real thing as it may not be !!! I genuinely feel cheated

CANON PIXMA iP4950 Colour Inkjet Printer,
By
This review is from: CANON 5287B006 iP4950 A4 MFP Printer - (Printers Multifunction Printers) (Personal Computers)
A superb printer. I originally bought it to replace a colour laser printer and was on a budget.I have been printing A5 full colour leaflets so far over 3000 and it just works! So a great printer for me. Ink, yes I've used a lot but you get at least 500 A4 full colour prints and I am printing full of text and images sheets. It hasn't jammed yet either which I expect to happen ever so often. The other thing I like is this is a printer! Not a scanner - fax combo. The 5 ink cartridge system is the best. You only change the ones that run out. But what makes this printer so fantastic are the photos. I only bought in for documents but tried the photo mode! OMG you can't tell between a professionally developed one and the printed one. Wow! You have to get proper paper (3 sheets come with it) but it's superb. Buy this you won't be disappointed.

Good stuff at the cheap, but beware of third parties,

This dedicated colour printer should have scored 5 stars if the cost of ink and the mis-selling of third parties on the Amazon marketplace have not conived to ruin a great printer.Set up and running is so easy you wonder if you have forgotten something. The quality is just keeping to Canon's tradition and still same with my now retired ip5300 save for its duplex capability. Unfortunately, the ink replacement cost is the sore point. This has now created an equally second problem of ink piracy which is why the Amazon Marketaplace is increasingly becoming a dangerous place to shop. I bought this printer recently only to discover that the original cartridges had been replaced by the seller (Compatible Ink) with their....compatible ink!. I have no problems with this but I should have been given that choice or have both inks enclosed to enbale me see the difference and make my choice later. I have long returned and got a refund from....Amazon, after long winding email correspondence. I later found that others have fallen victim to this con. Gven the shrinking canon tanks and the rising cost of those tanks, I don't mind buying compatible inks in future; and if many of us do this, perhaps Canon will do something about this matter. But for their printers; there's little they could do to improve their performances for now. They are already a class ahead of the pack in their various categories.

An excellent printer,

Purchased to replace my excellent iP4200 whose printhead had blocked past all hope of repair for roughly the same price as a replacement head. This came from a compatible ink company supplied with their own branded inks in place of canon inks.I use my printer mainly for photographs and this printer really delivers even with compatible inks. The print quality is superb and although I find its default energy save mode, and the delay while it gets out of sleep mode, a bit annoying once up and running printing is quick and very quiet. Duplex printing on both sides of the paper works very well although the instructions and finding things in the software menu system takes practice; using Ilford photo paper and icm profile it was clearer following Ilfords instructions rather than Canons (I don't think Canon want you using any other than Canon supplies). If you want a quality printer and not a "Jack of all trades" PSC machine then this is the one to go for. Canon PIXMA iP4950 Colour Printer 9600 x 2400 dpi (12.5 ipm Mono and 9.3 ipm Colour)

Printing on card,

This review is from: CANON 5287B006 iP4950 A4 MFP Printer - (Printers Multifunction Printers) (Personal Computers)
I was looking for a printer that would print on heavy card. With the help of Which I found this one.I'm not sure of the thickness or weight of all the different card I have but I do know 300gsm passes through very easily, and card that appears thicker has also worked. Also the boarderless printing is excellent picture postcard quality. For my requirements a first class piece of kit.

Error B200,
By
This review is from: CANON 5287B006 iP4950 A4 MFP Printer - (Printers Multifunction Printers) (Personal Computers)
I'm sure this is a fine printer when it works. The first one I bought gave error B200 straight out of the box, and never printed anything. The replacement printed a couple of pages and gave the same error. Canon say that this is a hardware error to do with the print head and the printer has to be returned. Did I have 2 from a bad batch? Who knows? Very frustrating though.

Ink Economy is Horrendous,
By
This review is from: CANON 5287B006 iP4950 A4 MFP Printer - (Printers Multifunction Printers) (Personal Computers)
The Title says it all so I'll keep the review short & sweet.I love (well used to) Canon printers. I arrived at this model as my trusty IP4500 finally gave up. I use my printer regularly, print lot's of photo's & A4 size posters ect. The IP4500 would print on average 70 full sheets of A4 photo quality colour before I got a message saying 'inks are running low get ready to replace' and even then they'd go on for a good while before I eventually had to change them. The IP4950 printed just 20 A4 colour pages before given me the same warning! Absolutely horrendous. The ink cartridges are much much smaller than anything Canon has produced before, even on the most economical settings it still eats ink like there's no tomorrow, giving you no choice but to purchase compatible inks. Canon really needs to get it's act together. I find it hard to believe that this machine even went into production given Canons excellent track record. Why release a printer that produces the same quality as earlier models but with less than half capacity cartridges! My advice avoid at all cost. I'll be returning mine for something much more sensible. This must be the worst move Canon ever made! edit: Another really bad thing I've noticed is that when printing on photo paper, the first couple of prints will have black ink smudges on the first edges white border. It doesn't matter if you've not used the printer for a day or two or if you used it just an hour ago...everytime, the first couple of prints will have this black ink spill on the border. An absolute joke. AVOID This must be the worst move Canon ever made!

a sensible and economic choice,

This review is from: CANON 5287B006 iP4950 A4 MFP Printer - (Printers Multifunction Printers) (Personal Computers)
This was a replacement for an exisitng Canon PIXMA so I was already sold on the make and model range. Printing is good quality, colour photos come out well and the machine is reasonably quick. It is however a little noisy and sometimes seems to make lots of whirring and clacking noises before it does anything. the software provided is good and the maintenance options for cleaning and aligning print heads is easy to use. the ink tanks are separate so you only replace the colour you run out of, not a whole colour cartridge like some printers. Canon cartridges are expensive and i have been using compatibles for a while. however, i think it was the last lot of compatibles (a new brand off ebay!) that killed the old printer by blocking print nozzles (serves me right for being a total cheapskate). so using compatibles it's important to choose good ones.this printer actually came with compatibles as opposed to canon cartridges. the print results are excellent and the replacement prices less than canon. as the printer vendor supplied these cartridges i assume using their compatibles in the future will be trouble free and not too expensive. certainly print quality is good.

Canon Pixma IP 4950 for pintable discs,

This review is from: CANON 5287B006 iP4950 A4 MFP Printer - (Printers Multifunction Printers) (Personal Computers)
I create many short films as my main hobby and have always used printable discs. A picture and title finishes off the disc and, unlike some adhesive lables, does not at times cause problems with some players, presumably because of the thickness being increased.I had always been totally satisfied with the print quality of my Canon printer, but then bought a new PC and on it was Windows 7. My previous computer had been XP but now 7 would not let that Canon print the discs - everything else, but not that. 'Download new drivers' you are saying. 'This driver my not let this facility work' said the Canon site. It didn't! As I regularly do a number of copies of my discs for family members I had to replaced my printer with the IP 4950. There are not many printers that have this facility and having been so satisfied with my previous Canon I did not consider another make. The discs are printed perfectly, as are photographs. I have not had it long and the only thing that annoys me is the paper in a shallow tray beneath the printer. I hope to get it to take paper from the upright feeder at the back, much easier to refill and change types of paper. So far I have only used that for photographic paper, as it indicated for that.

I am more than satisfied with the printer and although the Compatible Cartridges sent with the printer produced very good results, I would have prefered to have paid just a little more fot the printer and received a set of Canon Original Cartridges. I would then have been in the position of comparing Canon Original Cartridges against my usual Compatibles. The printer is not over noisy and when set for quiet mode is perfect for late evening printing when others are perhaps sleeping. The amount of ink the printer uses is hard to make a comparison between my "old" Canon S750 and this printer due to the difference in the amount of ink in each cartridge.Delivery of the printer was speedy as is usual from Amazon Marketplace dealers and was well packaged. Response to an email sent to them was excellent and informative H.(Barry) Sampson |
